Handhold and advice about my son's xray results please?

DS 11 had a fall about 4 months ago and ever since has had issues with his right leg.

We took him to the GP who said it was a trapped nerve and it has improved over time. However, it still wasn't back to normal. DH took him to his chiropractor for assessment which included an x ray.

They have come back today to say that there is an abnormality on the xray which means that he needs to be urgently referred to the GP following another examination of the x rays by a radiologist.

She mentioned bone cysts and fibrous dysplasia, I think that's right, I was too panicked to really take it in. I'm trying to keep it at one step at a time but a simple google search has seriously frightened me about non benign causes. We have an appointment with her on Friday for further explanation.

I also have no idea what to tell my son who has ADHD which presents with anxiety (especially health anxiety) as he will have to know when he goes to the GP

I don't know if anyone could offer some advice, please? Maybe there are questions I should be asking at the consultation. I'd be very grateful. I'm a naturally anxious person anyway and I'm trying to process but I think news like this would shock anyone and I'm feeling very sick and shaky.

Thanks.

Does your son necessarily need to be at the GP appointment? Surely they won't be examining him again externally at the surgery, they'll review the x ray and notes from chiropractor/radiologist and make a referral probably for further checks (maybe MRI? I don't know) but just for the short term I would not tell DS anything given his anxiety. My DS9 has ASD and anxiety and I know that's the approach I would take if in your shoes. Shield, shield, shield, until you have a definite answer as to what's going on.

I completely understand you being worried and feeling shaky, I think I would be too, but brave face for DS and lean on husband for emotional support x

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I wouldn't take him to the GP appointment unless they ask me to bring him along. It was more that they said he would need to be referred and what to tell him about that but it's probably best to just wait until I have details of what that looks like as you said.

It's a good reminder to put on a brave face and not worry him further! Thank you.

Has the chiropractor spoken to/written to the Gp? As a healthcare professional with the power to expose children to radiation, they should be communicating professionally with medical colleagues so that it doesn’t lead to unnecessary repeated investgations. Will the Gp be able to access the report if the xray was done privately?

It's hard doing the brave face and withholding information for kids emotional sakes but you'll be glad you did I think.

@Greybeardy I'm not sure, I was too shocked to ask. She may have said but I didn't take any of it in - thank you, those are all questions I can ask when I see them.

Surely the fact that your son injured his leg means that it's highly likely the 'abnormality' is something to do with this ?
Perhaps there was a small break and something has displaced / scar tissue maybe ?? I am guessing but fingers crossed it's nothing serious .
