Xrays and MRIs

My husband has a serious knee injury. He's waiting for an xray ordered by his GP and told to rest.

Last weekend something happened in his sleep and he woke in dreadful pain, huge swelling, heat and redness. 111 advised him to go to minor injuries for a scan as something had changed.

Minor injuries couldn't help as it was a pain not an injury (apparently) and he was to go back to his gp and request a mri because they thought his meniscus had escaped and with ligament issues etc won't show on an xray. And he shouldnt rest but keep moving as much as possible. 111 apparantly shouldn't have sent him there. They did give him.a crutch stick though, which has been immensely helpful.

The GP says they have no access to mri referrals and he has to wait for xray and results of that first.

If all of this is true, fine. Some of this sounds fishy though and we don't know who to trust.

Can anyone give any clarification?

In our experience with DD’s spine this sounds correct to me. Her GP has been able to request X-rays but not MRIs - only her consultant is able to request those.

My GP referred me for an MRI. Not sure why it would be possible for some GPs and not others 🤷

It varies from area to area and what the mri is needed for I’m afraid. Some gps won’t be able to direct refer in for an mri for a knee.

minor injuries however absolutely could have ordered an mri even as an outpatient
