Bit of bone sticking through gum after tooth extraction

Has anyone else had this.
It's about 3 months since tooth was taken out. Dentist said it would work its way out but it still hasn't and it's quite sore now.
Is there anything I can do to encourage it out ?
I'm swilling corsodyl round it to try and stop it getting an infection as it's just about broken through the gum.

Sorry to hear this. Sounds to me as though the dentist needs to sort it out (and should actually have sorted it out when you had the extraction so no further fee).

historicalnews · 06/02/2024 19:57

It was a visiting dentist because it was classed as a more difficult extraction (?) - and so cost £350!
I've been back to my own dentist but they just said it will just come out on its ownConfused

I'm not a dentist, and maybe someone who is can advise, but in the meantime I'd be telling mine that it hasn't come out after three months, that it's now painful and an irritant and that you want them to remove it now. I'd also be pointing out that it should have been removed at the time of the extraction (unless a dentist comes to explain why that might not be the case) Flowers

My husband had this. He had to be go back and have it grinded down at the dentist- sorry!

historicalnews · 06/02/2024 21:00

I know absolutely nothing (!) but I think the reason they can't remove it at the time is because you can't see it until the rest of the skin has healed (?)
Confused at the thought of it needing grinding down

I had this after a tooth extraction. Maxillofacial surgeon told me that there were two options - one was to wait for it to resolve naturally, the second was to cut open the gum, extract the bone, stitch it closed and wait for healing.
Both had roughly the same time to complete recovery so he advised leave it

historicalnews · 06/02/2024 21:08

Oh that's interesting @QueenOfHiraeth - can you remember how long it took in the end ? And did you do anything to encourage it out ?

I had all my bottom teeth removed this happened to me.it felt like it would come through the gum. It sorted its self out in the end

helpfulperson · 06/02/2024 21:10

Definitely go back to your own dentist and say you are having problems. I'm anticipating something similar as I have a bit left in after an extraction due to it being too close to the sinuses to remove without it being a major operation. My dentist has estimated about 6 months for it to work it's way out but was very clear about going back if it got painful.

historicalnews · 06/02/2024 21:11

Thanks for the replies. Useful to know that dentist said could take 6 months.
I've had teeth removed in the past but never had this

I just pulled mine out with tweezers, it was like a small shard of bone
Had a few of them work their way out

historicalnews · 06/02/2024 21:23

I'm not sure I'm that brave ! @Paw2024

I've had this twice. Both times it eventually poked through the gum and I was able to remove myself with tweezers. Was oddly satisfying!

Paw2024 · 06/02/2024 21:28

It didn't hurt, my dentist told me to Grin I did ask them first
Felt loads better once it was out

Tusktusk · 06/02/2024 21:36

I’ve had this too, about 3 or 4 months after an extraction. They are bone shards and they do work themselves out painlessly. Very satisfying when they come out!

Rovinonmars · 06/02/2024 21:38

If it's not massive just pull it with tweezers. My dentist advised me to and it worked a charm

historicalnews · 06/02/2024 22:55

Tweezers seem way to go !
Will report back in about 3 months when I've been brave enough ...

I can't remember the exact time, sorry, but it was quite a while.
Like others have said the bits of bone worked their way to the surface which was most uncomfortable just before they broke the surface and, once they were poking out, I removed them myself with tweezers

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 07/02/2024 06:08

I did the tweezer thing too. It took nearly 2 months for mine to heal and everything work it's way out. I feel for you OP it's horrible.

historicalnews · 07/02/2024 13:08

The miracle of mumsnet !! It's come out ! Must have been all the fiddling I did with it yesterday. Thanks everyone
