Tooth infection

My LL wisdom tooth is causing me a lot of pain! It keeps getting infected. Half of it is hiding underneath my gum, making it ever so easy for bacteria/ food to travel there.

I try to keep it as clean as possible. And everytime I start feeling a little pain I straight away go in there with corsodyl mouthwash and I have it a good brush. Repeat this until it goes away.

this time it’s not going away. I’ve been on antibiotics for this issue in October. So my dentist won’t give me antibiotics again.

i am on the referral list to get it removed at the hospital. Due to its location, it apparently needs a special dentist for it.

that’s a few months wait though. But my tooth if infected now. What do I do in the meantime? Surely it’s not safe to leave an infection that long?

Your dentist should surely give you more antibiotics? Over three months have passed since October, I'd call him and ask him what he suggests.

Have you tried warm salt water to rinse with, when I've had infected wisdoms in the past it's given me a degree of relief (but you do need metronidazole to sort it properly in my opinion)

You’d think!!

but no, she said she won’t prescribe me more antibiotics because it’s only been a few months and she doesn’t want me becoming resistant to them.

anyways, I’ve managed to get a sooner appointment at the hospital to get it removed.

Dentists are amongst the professionals who are antibiotic guardians. The guidelines are that antibiotics should not be prescribed unless there are signs of systemic spread (high temperature , systemically unwell etc) or swelling compromising airway or stopping you opening mouth to clean. This is particularly true of wisdom tooth infections as local cleaning measures normally keep them under control.

This is because antibiotic resistance is a coming apocalypse that will make covid look like a walk in the park according to many sources including Englands chief medical officer . Dentists are regularly audited to make sure that are not prescribing unnecessary antibiotics.

Dentists are becoming a joke... waiting few months to remove a tooth that hurts... cope however you want meanwhile.... my partner is waiting here already months too and theyve cancelled his appointment ... I'm sure theyll take it out if it was private...
One idea.. try teething gels from the baby isle
The other u know..painkillers etc... its ridiculous i hope it stopps hurting

The tooth is a wisdom tooth and needs taking out by specialist. Unfortunately due to other pressures on specialist services eg cancer , trauma , cleft palate etc wisdom teeth waiting lists are increasing.

God I had eight courses if antibiotics (all amoxicillin) in a year for a similar issue! It was covid times and the appointment kept getting pushed back.

Dentist is being a bit daft imo - dental infections can make you really unwell and there's other choices than amoxicillin they could prescribe!

No because as an antibiotic guardian they are not allowed to prescribe any antibiotics unless there are signs of systemic infection.
We know during the two months of COVID shut down antibiotics were prescribed where, in normal times, they normally shouldn't be but it was strange times.
If we do not curb inappropriate use of antibiotics people will start to die , in the near future, from minor scratches and injuries.
Dentists are audited to makes sure that antibiotics are only used where necessary or systemic infection. There are other ways to treat wisdom tooth infections.

I'm currently experiencing a painful wisdom tooth, finding eating at on the opposite side the best help of all as stops food getting stuck. I'm also trying peroxyl mouthwash and salt water gargles. Oh and soft toothbrush when brushing round the tooth, tepes and the occasional ibuprofen, chucking everything at it really.

Have a look at the single tufted tooth brush posted above. It will get under the gum much better than a normal toothbrush. It will make it bleed but that will settle down.
