I'm terrified and need some advice, if you can.
My husband went into acute urinary retention recently and has a catheter fitted.
After not getting anywhere with the NHS we pooled all resources and have gone private.
Saw the Consultant and he has asked for an MRI with contrast.
It's the contrast but that's frightened me/us.
Do they do that as a matter of course?
He had a physical examination and was told the prostate was enlarged but smooth.
That put our minds at rest, until we received the appointment.
Looking online it seems that they use an MRI with contrast if they suspect cancer.
He knows he's having an operation anyway.
Sorry this is long but:
Is an mri with contrast normal in these circumstances and should we be concerned?
It's 3 weeks until the scan so, a lot of time to tie ourselves in knots over this.
Can anyone give any advice?

They use contrast if they want to see fluids moving through the tissues or veins etc. Its completely normal for loads of MRIs that have nothing to do with cancer

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 05/02/2024 23:12

Yes, contrast is quite standard.

Blinky21 · 05/02/2024 23:38

Contrast is standard procedure, I had it for a suspected blood clot in my lung, it's a weird sensation but totally fine

TheDogsMother · 05/02/2024 23:42

I had one in December to see if a cancer diagnosis had spread. I think it's completely standard though is an odd sensation.

Contrast is standard to see bodily fluids moving through structures.

My DH had this for an enlarged prostate. His didn't show any cancer. I think it is standard procedure. His was also done privately.

Thank you so much all of you. We've been so anxious over the whole thing that I think, any little thing is setting us off now.
I really need to stop googling things!!!
I can get some sleep now you've reassured me

I've had two MRIs with contrast - one on each shoulder. The contrast was to show how big the space was in the joint. By injecting the dye it shows up much more clearly on the image. Definitely wasn't checking for cancer.

They use PET/CT scan for checking for cancer.

Thanks all
