Statins - Itching?

twiddlingthumbs69 · 04/02/2024 17:53

Has anyone experienced itching while being on statins?
Itching as in all over, but no rash.
It's strange, I've been on them for years with no problems but, over the past year, I've had this bloody itching everywhere, especially at night.
My cholesterol level is really low anyway I'm tempted to stop taking them. Get tested monthly at the pharmacy and see if it makes any difference.
Just interested to know if anyone else has had the same problem?

How old are you op? Could it be menopause related? Theres lots of things that could be causing it, I’d try ruling those out first. I would think it less likely to be a medication that you've tolerated well for several years already.

Talk to your GP - some statins can affect liver / kidneys so they might want to do some bloods tests and maybe switch the one you are on?

@Auntiesitting wayyyyy past menopause. I've been racking my brains and really can't think of anything. Done all the usual, changed to Ecover zero washing liquid, Sanex etc

May indicate a liver problem. Call your GP for a blood test.

Is it lipitor/atorvastatin? They do have side effects of liver damage. You should be having regular bloods to check.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 05/02/2024 08:27

@Soberfutures yes that's them. Been on them 13 years and GP has never done any bloods. I'm going to stop taking them and see if that helps

Please request bloods ASAP for liver and muscle damage. And repeat your cholesterol. May just be a coincidence but best to be safe. I had a bad reaction a month after starting them so I'm on a different statin now. I'm very shocked you have not been monitored.

Auntiesitting · 05/02/2024 12:04

I think the better option is to get some blood tests done. Liver function, U&Es to check your kidneys, full blood count, thyroid function. Surely it’s much better to try to trace the cause of the problem than just randomly stop a medication that is clearly working well for you if your cholesterol levels are good.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 05/02/2024 12:20

Thanks all. Had a full blood test done last week, for something else.
All levels are in range. Nothing stood out at all to point me in a direction

So glad you had a blood test, you should be having them annually.

Try CeraVe cream, it's cheap and you get a huge pot. Slather it on and see if it helps, give it a month to repair the skin barrier.
