Insect bite

I've had this insect bite for over a week and a half now (no idea which insect though!) and this morning I've woken up to it looking like this! I've been taking piriton on the advice of the pharmacist last week but the red ring has appeared today! Does it need looking at again do we think? Or just continue on with the piriton? It isn't hot or painful anymore - just really itchy! Not sure if it's infected. Any advice is helpful thank you!

That definitely needs antibiotics. Please see your GP!

In the meantime, ice it and continue with the piriton.

Or go to an out of hours GP service today.

I thought this may be the case - thank you! I will sort something today!

You can see a pharmacist and they will now prescribe antibiotics for bites.

Oh brilliant! Thank you, much easier!

Is there a possibility it was a tick that bit you? Just that if so there is a risk of Lyme disease which that type of rash can be a symptom of

Well... I went to a farm with my two year old last week for his birthday so quite possibly that or a horse fly?!

I was going to mention Lyme's too. If it is possibly a tick bite, I think you need to see a GP. If you are in a Lyme's area you may need specific antibiotic, rather than for an infected bite.

Thank you all.

My local Asda pharmacy just refused to look at it (how very odd!!) as they wanted to look at a picture only. They said it potentially looks like a tick bite but to phone GP tomorrow. I wasn't happy with this so I drove to another pharmacy 20 minutes away where they checked it over and prescribed me some hydrocortisone cream initially and if it doesn't improve to phone GP. I'm very confused as to why the Asda pharmacist didn't want to check it! 🤷‍♀️

As its quite infected, I would cautiously apply the hydrocortisone cream as it may inflame it further.

Maybe take another photo with a tape measure draped across the middle so you can see where it all begins and ends, and see if it’s growing or shrinking. (Old school method is to draw around the outside and write the time you did that on your arm too).

I’m sure you were warned to watch out for any flu-like symptoms. (I wonder if the Asda people wanted to be able to consult a central pharmacist before giving advice - hence a photo they could share with other clinicians).

VestPantsandSocks · 05/02/2024 14:40

How are you OP?

How are you OP?

Thank you everybody for all of your helpful advice!

Thankfully after applying a thin layer of hydrocortisone cream and continuing with the piriton, the bite has calmed down and the red ring has gone away and so has all of the itchiness!

As it has calmed down I haven't gone to my GP (plus I was teaching today so wouldn't have had a chance to anyway!). Thank you all again!
