Should I bother my GP about cramp?

I've always been prone to cramp when very tired, pregnant or after lots of exercise. I've started to get it more frequently now, especially at night in my left calf which will wake me up feeling like my leg is snapping in two.
I have varicose veins, get very cold hands and feet and often get chilblains in winter so guess I probably have some circulation issues. Could they be linked to the cramp?
NHS website seems petty blasé about cramp in general so don't know if it's worth an appointment or not or if I just need to put up with. I'm 45 if that makes a difference.

I sometimes get bad cramp in my calves if I've been 'sedentary' for a long time. ( I have a business which means I'm constantly 'on the move' when working, so no cramp on those days ).
It makes things like a long flight to go on holiday means I'll be getting bad cramps that night !
I find if I stretch the calf muscles before getting into bed it can help - really stretch them by keeping your feet flat on the floor while leaning on a wall, and easing your feet as far away from the wall as you can.
Another thing that can help is a magnesium spray onto the calves before getting into bed.
Hope that helps a little.

Thanks @KimMG . My cramp used to come on after a very busy day once I've sat down to relax but now it's happening more frequently with no apparent triggers. I'll check out the magnesium spray.

I used to get really bad cramp that would wake me in the middle of the night. I tried a magnesium spray but it didn't do much for me (though did smelly nice!). Friend then recommended the ones in the picture. Hasn't happened since.

I've been getting cramp on and off for years. Never occurred to me to see a GP. It's just one of those things - you'll be fine, OP.

Do you have any swelling or redness? Definitely see a gp if you do

Tigertigertigertiger · 03/02/2024 16:58

I get it loads more . I presumed it was an age thing. I don't think it warrants a gp visit

Peridot1 · 03/02/2024 17:00

I find eating a banana every day helps.

Deafening · 03/02/2024 17:02

Magnesium.

tulippa · 03/02/2024 18:56

Thanks for all the suggestions.
@Mynewnameis Don't think there's any swelling. Will check for redness later.
I don't like traipsing to the GP at the best of times and certainly don't fancy it in the current climate so will leave it for now. DH and DCs were suggesting it yesterday evening when I was jumping up off the sofa and pacing around the living room with it as it's happening more and more.
Will invest in some magnesium. @Peridot1 I love bananas but my stomach can't cope with eating them daily unfortunately.

That’s a shame @tulippa. Definitely try magnesium though.

With the bananas I started having one every day but then found having one around 3 times a week or so was enough to keep the cramps at bay. So maybe just try eating what you can cope with.
