found out today I have cervical cancer and in less than 3 weeks I will be having a hysterectomy - and therefore becoming menopausal immediately as I will have overuse removed too.
just had a blood test and awaiting a date for the mri to check for spread .
just wanted to know there is anyone else that has walked this path.
mentally it's a struggle already , trying to keep positive but going throu go na rage of emotions at the moment so hoping for safe words of wisdom

@765g

I had cervical cancer a few years ago. It was Stage 1 initially, so I had an abdominal hysterectomy. They would have taken my ovaries by default, but I told the medical team that I wanted to keep my ovaries to retain my fertility and they had to agree to it. They have to do what you want in this regard. They can't just take bits of you without permission. I think it's just easier for them to cut the whole lot out. Ask about keeping your ovaries, if that's what you want.

As it turned out, my cancer came back and I had to have radiotherapy in the end and that incinerated my ovaries into oblivion (triggering menopause), so I was no better off for having kept them, but I'm in the minority as the hysterectomies are usually successful.

It's a rough deal though, I'm sorry you're in this position.

Just to add that treatments for cervical cancer are very successful in general, so you have every chance of a good outcome.

You could visit the Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust website. They have a forum, which you may find a comfort.

Thank you for sharing, i am sorry you went through that twice really , are you ok now? I have been reading on that website peoples experience, logically I know that I am due a good outcome , it's just a lot to process .
I just can't sleep , to be honest my brain won't let me it just keeps giving me weird scenarios and even when I have slept
for short spells I dream about it and it's not proper sleep.
how long did it take for you to recover and get back to work from the surgery ?

I'm sorry you're going through this @765g

I've no specific advice but if you look in the general health forum, there's an ongoing cancer support thread a few of us are on, and someone there will help

It's no 92 now! Mentions Christmas in the title but ignore that 😁

I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I haven't had cervical cancer but a friend of mine has seven years ago. She had a hysterectomy and has made a full recovery.

765g · 03/02/2024 07:48

Thank you I will come look out for that 😌

I had to have 12 weeks off work after the hysterectomy and then I went back on a phased return. Don't underestimate how much time you will need to recover. I was exhausted and largely immobile for a large chunk of that 12 weeks. Do you live alone? If so, I highly recommend you make arrangements to stay with someone for at least the first few weeks post-surgery or have someone come to stay with you.

I absolutely understand your current emotional turmoil. I cried A LOT and didn't get much sleep when I was going through the "staging" process. It's a truly horrible time and I know that statistics don't really help! But hopefully you will feel more positive a few weeks after the surgery. You got this!

Thank you so much for your kind words , I live with my husband and 5 year old son .
we have a good supportive family around us though I know husband is really going to be busy juggling work a 5 year old and me out of action .
i am concerned about pain as well as the lletz Procedure caused significant pain ( in spells it wasn't contestant ) , the pain was similar level to child birth or gallstone pain- it's largely over now 4 weeks later. I swear my cervix was causing half the pain it still feels wrong to date, but as it's being removed in a couple of weeks that's a non issue.
I will take it easy unnoticed my boss has blocked my diary for 6 weeks already and it's good to know if I don't feel upto returning after 6 weeks it's not uncommon that I may need longer .
thank you again
