Infected tooth extraction. How painful?

Painpaingoaway1 · 02/02/2024 23:17

On Monday, I started having pain in my back tooth and my gums. By Wednesday the pain was excruciating so I saw my dentist and was prescribed antibiotics. The pain became worse today despite taking the antibiotics so I saw an emergency dentist. She was absolutely horrible and unsympathetic and wanted to remove the tooth, which i am terrified of. She told me she has other patients to see and if I want to stay in pain then I should leave. She was very rough when looking at the tooth.

Now, I know I'm going to have to have this tooth removed and I'm gonna book into to see my dentist in the morning. I'm in pain but I'm absolutely terrified of getting it removed. Has anyone had an infected tooth extracted and how bad was it?

Yes I think the advice has changed too. The dentist today refused to change the antibiotics. She said get the tooth out or nothing!

Ps on both occasions the local anaesthetic worked fine, it did not hurt having it out just pushing and pulling😬hope you get it sorted soon💐

Painpaingoaway1 · 03/02/2024 01:06

I would much prefer a new antibiotic and have it removed when the infection is gone but I was not given that option.

Even with the infection present the removal didn't hurt? @Mossstitch

I've had both my top wisdom teeth out. After the bleeding stopped (took a few hours so be prepared to sit with your feet up) I just had to be careful not to poke it or eat on that side. I can't remember even taking paracetamol for it.

The thought of it happening was far worse than the reality.

Mossstitch · 03/02/2024 01:11

No there was no pain and I hadn't had any antibiotics for the second one. It was a more difficult extraction as came away in pieces and took longer but definitely no pain. The dentist took great pleasure in showing me the roots and the abscess on it.......good job I'm not squeamish but I do have a dentist phobia from childhood so you have my utmost sympathy😳

BasiliskStare · 03/02/2024 01:13

@Painpaingoaway1 I would say that with an anaesthetic jab you won't feel any pain and if the tooth is infected it might be easier to take out. Afterwards I reckon it will be nurofen for a day and just not biting on that side. But I suspect the relief will be overwhelming - I hope so.

I hate the dentist ( not mine just in general ) but I don't think it will as bad as you think.

Painpaingoaway1 · 03/02/2024 01:13

Thanks for your replies. I am feeling a bit more eased now although still in pain :(

OP I had a tooth infection disaster last year - the pain you’re experiencing now will be brutal (ringing up your face and into your ears?) - removal is nothing in comparison - please don’t be frightened, but you need this done ASAP. Yes def try and find a friendlier dentist.

I have had two teeth extracted from the back of my mouth. One was a failed root canal (I didn’t realise that was possible). Honestly, a bit sore for 24 hours then fine. Removed at the dentist surgery. Numb face for a few hours after though!

Last year my infection went out of control (not my first infection) - if you experience a fever and / or severe face swelling / neck swelling OP then seek help at the hospital. Tooth was removed under general after being admitted via A&E - I let it dwindle far too long hoping the abscess would just pop or whatever. Don’t make my mistake.

Be brave OP but also be pushy - you must push how bad the pain is because it won’t heal. The tooth removal will be a relief, biggest relief of your life. You won’t feel it, you’ll just feel a sensation.

not all dentists are like that woman. I hope you find a better one and it’s sorted soon xx

Painpaingoaway1 · 03/02/2024 01:29

No fever or swelling. I do have a painful lump under my jaw directly under the infected tooth but thats it. I've got my alarm set for 8am. Can't even think about sleeping right now, pain relief isn't touching the sides right now

My dentist prescribed stronger painkilkers at the same time as the antibiotic. Paracetamol was just like taking smarties - no effect whatsoever, but the Difene he prescribed worked reasonably well.

Rosievictoria · 03/02/2024 01:32

I hope it's sorted soon 💐

Painpaingoaway1 · 03/02/2024 01:32

I will ask for stronger pain relief tomorrow. I can't stop crying I don't know how I'm going to get through tonight honestly

Oh I'm so sorry OP!

I had an infected tooth removed a few weeks ago. I took - I think - codeine and paracetamol? The fizzy tablets you dissolve in water? First time I tried them as paracetamol etc did nothing for me. They really worked! That and heat or cold depending on what you find soothing. I took a brand called zipamol plus.

having the tooth removed wasn’t painful - the sensation was weird - some pain (bruising) the day after from the tooth being pulled out.

The injection sites felt a little tender. Rested for first 24 hours and just had tepid liquids as I couldn’t cope with too cold or warm. Started salt rinses after the first 24 hours to allow clotting etc.

all fine now.

massive squishes @Painpaingoaway1 and good luck.

I've taken painkillers, alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen. Nothing is helping, I've had two children and this is worse than childbirth. I'm gonna contact out of hours and see if I can be seen tonight. I look awful, I'm in floods of tears. Going to try and be brave and get it out

You don’t have to alternate, you can take them together. They don’t interact. You just need to take no more than the maximum dose of each in a day and at the intervals stated on the packet.

Painpaingoaway1 · 03/02/2024 02:00

Last took paracetamol about at 12 and the some ibuprofen at about 11. I don't how many I've taken In the last three days so I'm going to try take a break until after I've seen the dentist. I've even alternating every 4 hours. Good to know I can take them together. Worst pain I've had in my life

I know lots of people recommend ice packs but both times when I had an infection in my gums/teeth I found a heat pad more effective. I slept sat almost upright with a heat pad at hand whoever I woke up, also took painkillers every four hours - I’m on paracetamol and tramadol for arthritis in my knees and was still in agony! I seem to get pain in my sinuses when I have a gum infection so used to put Olbas oil on a tissue and sniffed it frequently.

But the discomfort of a tooth extraction was nothing compared to the pain from the infection so despite my dental phobia, I just had to bite the bullet and go for it! I needed three injections for my last extraction but luckily my dentist was sympathetic and willing to wait for the injections to kick in. I had very little discomfort once the tooth was removed, it healed really quickly in just a couple of days of gentle mouth washes and soft food.

I am still scared of going to the dentist but force myself to go every six months for a check up. I hope you get some relief soon, the treatment will be better than the pain you are having at the moment. I actually cried with my last extraction as it took a while for the dentist to yank it out, I found that the more the infection had affected the tooth, the easier the extraction.

Good luck!

Just remember if you don't alternate then potentially you'll end up with a gap where you can't take anything

Paracetamol in particular be careful you don't take too many

Northernsouloldies · 03/02/2024 04:24

Blessed relief once its out op and keep it clean with warm salt water rinse as others have said, I speak through experience of dental pain when younger. You will be fine. 👍

QuelleSupriseMoi · 03/02/2024 05:32

Hope that you managed to get some sleep and that you get your tooth sorted today. 💐

Copperoliverbear · 03/02/2024 05:48

Get some clove oil from the chemist too. X

Just12345 · 03/02/2024 09:06

Hope you have managed to get an appointment.

Tooth pain is the worst and I'm also scared of extraction so I really feel for you

Sleepy90 · 03/02/2024 10:17

If it's infected I don't think the anaesthetic will work, they gave me 3 shots and it did absolutely nothing, although I've always needed extra even during non dental surgery's.

You should still get it out though, the pain will be immense for 5-10 seconds but the relief is immediate.

karma3 · 03/02/2024 11:03

Hopefully they take it out for you. They took mine out with a present infection because the pain was so bad. Hopefully you've got an appointment
