Jerusalem artichoke - how long will this last

I roasted and ate a whole lot of them for dinner. They were so delicious, I wondered why I'd never had them before.

However shortly after I developed really bad stomach cramps and really bad gas. It then turned into diarrhea. I got a few hours sleep and have now been up since 4am with awful cramps again. I really thought it would be better by now. I am doubled over in pain.

Please tell me this will end soon or if there is anything that would help? I've had peppermint tea but it's doing nothing. Thanks!

I made this mistake. Never touched one again since! I think it lasted about 18 hours from what I remember.

Sunshineonrainyday5 · 02/02/2024 06:12

Thanks @FoxSticks , it's only been 10 hours so some way to go then, but still good news that it won't be days! I read that it has a specific type of fiber some people are intolerant to - never again....

I've also got some sort of tonsillitis and had aches and horrendous throat pain already, so I am feeling very sorry for myself! So much pain from everywhere I could cry!

Yes the pain was really nasty for me too. I had never heard they could cause problems and like you roasted them and then gobbled them up thinking they were a great potato alternative. They are delicious but evil! Really hope it passes for you soon.

Sunshineonrainyday5 · 02/02/2024 06:23

@FoxSticks yes I'm so surprised about the pain, flatulence is one thing but the cramps are something else!

Thank you! The toddlers are now awake, so off to put a brave face on and hope tonight's bedtime comes round quickly!

They don't call them fartichokes for nothing?

They don't call them fartichokes for nothing?

True.

I love them but only ever eat them when I know it is safe to do so, ie nobody around to gas!

I hope you feel better soon, OP.

Gatekeeper · 02/02/2024 06:31

Oh Lord, this happened to me after scoffing a plate of them as they were so delicious. Horrendous stomach cramps and growing in intensity followed by non stop farting...
For hours and hours
Dont mind admitting that I actually cried!

shearwater2 · 02/02/2024 06:35

I avoid them if they are on a menu. Yet some posh restaurants seem hell bent on causing their customers serious digestive disturbance by putting them in several menu options.

They are just not worth the bother, bland, evil little fuckers. Proper artichokes are lush though.

greenacrylicpaint · 02/02/2024 06:37

yep they are full of fibre. especialky the 'good' kind inlin which helps regulate blood sugar.
unfortunately some people need to buld up their tolerance.

they only make me gassy, no pain. but omg I swear they make my duvet float a ft over the bed

Magenta82 · 02/02/2024 06:38

They taste so good but they cause so many repercussions! I did the same a few years back and then went out for a friend's birthday. Spent the whole night in the loo! They really should come with a warning!

MollyButton · 02/02/2024 06:40

Another thing to be wary of are dried Apricots. I like them but now avoid. I'm not sure if they're as bad if hidden in things.

shearwater2 · 02/02/2024 06:57

It's not surprising that most people haven't "built up their tolerance" to Jerusalem artichokes in the UK, and honestly why would you bother? They've not exactly been a commonly or cheaply available vegetable. I have a very good diet and no other veg or pulses upset my stomach. And there are plenty of other ways to get fibre. I'd much rather eat a conference pear.

Sunshineonrainyday5 · 02/02/2024 07:14

@Blueuggboots sadly I'm not from the UK and had never heard about the term Fartichokes. But even if I had I probably still would have had them thinking how bad can it be? (I eat beans, Brussels sprouts and the like).

I think a large part of the problem may be the sheer quantity I ate, I really found them delicious 😞

@Gatekeeper I'm ashamed to say I have also been close to tears!

Blueuggboots · 02/02/2024 07:19

I had them once, never again!!!

shearwater2 · 02/02/2024 12:11

Yes, to be fair I have got away with them in small quantity in a meal more recently. But I would never pick anything where JAs were the main ingredient.

StarbucksStraw · 21/09/2024 11:34

I have a recipe for soup which uses Jerusalem artichokes, but I can't seem to find them to buy in the supermarket.

Where were you buying them in the UK? I'm in Scotland, haven't seen them in Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco or M and S.

Winter root vegetable won't be around until November

Thanks. I've had the recipe book since Christmas and I tried last winter too with no joy.

I ate a dish made of dried apricots and cashew nuts. I was farting for hours!

newtb · 21/09/2024 13:39

If you add celery to thé looking water it stops thé side effects. So I've read.....

minipie · 21/09/2024 13:44

Oh I love them! They do make me farty though so I never eat them before anything social. Never had cramps or the runs, poor you OP.

Interesting about the celery… will research. But I tend to roast not boil them so not sure if there is a remedy for that.

Footle · 21/09/2024 15:53

My mother loved them. We used to check anxiously "are these potatoes or nastichokes?"

theeyeofdoe · 21/09/2024 21:26

waitrose usually have them in season. They make a lovely soup with sautéd scallops added.

LightDrizzle · 21/09/2024 21:31

They are SO delicious! There is a fabulous Tom Kerridge toast chicken dish with artichokes that I made and DH and I scoffed the lot. We thought we’d escaped the aftermath we’d heard of but 11.00 the next morning it kicked in. It was unreal!

I still love them though, they are a rare treat. It should only be a few hours.
