What would you advise for DS?

For transparency I have acid reflux - diagnosed & doing acid watcher diet. Meds don’t really suit me so am managing w diet and gaviscon advance but it’s not completely gone. I know a lot about the variety of symptoms from dealing with it myself - I read proper advice from experts in the field.
So it looks like DS has it too. He’s 19, at uni, been through a v stressful year (started w mild symptoms about a year ago). Seen an ENT at home privately in summer who said it wasn’t reflux but he still has awful
post-nasal drip/mucous and a sore and inflamed throat which ENT saw on camera - but still declared it wasn’t LPR/reflux. althpugh these are typical symptoms. He’s not an allergic person unlike DD.At home in summer he was using Neilmed sinus rinse but it’s too much of a faff at uni. He was also prescribed a steroid spray.
So he calls me today & says his throat is worse. He’s been using the GAviscon Advance I sent him back with, but annoyingly he sometimes smokes. Exactly what the ENT says not to do, whatever was going on, so I’m sure it’s made it worse. His diet is relatively ok for a student and he’s not having fizzy drinks atm, but does drink beer. It will be impossible for him to go on a strict low acid diet while there.
He said he’ll go to GP there now he’s registered in uni city and in meantime get sterimar which is saline spray.
From being on Reflux FB pages etc I know it can take years to be diagnosed, but it’s not something that can be left either.
It’s hard when it’s your child as you just want them to be ok, but he’s an adult so he has to manage this.I don’t want to scare him with the fact it can lead to cancer in the future either as he’s anxious enough as it is! If anyone has tips for me to get through to him about the not smoking particularly, that would be great.

when the doctor said they didn’t think it was acid reflux, did they say what they thought it was instead? I would have thought that a first step might be for him to return to his GP and tell them that his symptoms are ongoing and have got worse?

Helicobacter pylori. Not sure spelling is right. It can cause bad reflux and stomach ulcers. Has he been checked for that? My son had that at that age.

The gaviscon won't help if it's post nasal drip?

I'm interested to know why the ENT said it isn't reflux, and why you think it isn't PND. I have PND, and antihistamine hasn't made any difference at all so I assume it's not down to allergies. Mine started after I had covid three years ago and it's not gone away.

@sewingstockings Could be h pylori. I had it and took the treatment but not sure it worked as it didn’t cure reflux! It was seen on endoscopy and not in stool. i may need another go…

ENT said it was ‘just’ PND irritating the throat, but there has to be a reason for having PND. He said it was allergy, but he’s really not allergic - he thought it could be environmental but he’s out of that working environment now. 🤷‍♀️ His sister has allergies, always been atopic, but he never has eczema or anything like that. def time for him to go to GP. I’ll have to be on his case a bit.

@ohthehokey - it will help the PND (I did say he had PND but it’s a symptom not a disease in itself) if it’s caused by reflux as the acid comes up and mucous comes down to protect the throat. Gaviscon will stop acid coming up.
He also had covid when this started but I’m not sure if it started before covid or after! Covid certainly exacerbated my reflux symptoms.
He could try an antihistamine and see if it makes a difference, but I doubt it.

What about an air filter for his student bedroom? Is his accommodation dusty or near a big road? Or does that seem pointless if he’s going to smoke? In terms of talking to him smoking, the only idea is I have to follow the ‘rolling with resistance’ approach from motivational interviewing, which might involve stating how enjoyable having a smoke is on a night out.
