Endoscopy recovery after sedation

I'm booked in for endoscopy next Thursday at 2.30pm and am opting for sedation.....no way I'm even trying without!
I'm just wondering how long before I'll be ok again as I have to drive somewhere the next morning. I know I can't drive afterwards and my other half will take me home but how am I likely to feel the next day?
Should I reschedule my plans? I know I always feel fine the day after being fully under for ops so was assuming I'd be ok within a few hours Hmm

Just had one this afternoon and punch drunk now! It says you shouldn't drive for 24 hours so I probably wouldn't/won't x

You shouldnt drive

SpikeWithoutASoul · 01/02/2024 17:42

I was totally fine within twenty minutes and I told them to really whack up the sedation as I was terrified! It was absolutely fine.

SpikeWithoutASoul · 01/02/2024 17:43

Obviously stick to the guidelines! Just saying that I felt normal surprisingly quickly.

The sedation doesn’t really do anything for me. More chills me out so I don’t panic but doesn’t doze me out. I don’t drive anyway so I don’t have this problem, but I would have felt fine driving home (even though it isn’t allowed) and definitely would have been fine driving the next day.

The only time the sedation had any effect on me was when it was combined with gas and air during an endoscopy and colonoscopy. I felt very drunk afterwards and it took me a few hours to recover

Rosscameasdoody · 01/02/2024 17:47

Sedation is different from a GA given for surgery. Anaesthetic is metabolised much more quickly. I had sedation for a colonoscopy and the following morning I knew I still wasn’t fit to drive. I’d go with the advice not to do so for the 24 hours, and reschedule your plans.

Helleboring · 01/02/2024 17:47

The instructions you will be given say don't drive for 24 hours. Not sure you would be covered by your insurance if you were driving before the time was up.

Had a few before l had my gall bladder out.. had gall stones and bile sludge removed...this way.
I felt fine half an hour later..
Just don't drink.. because your throat will still be numb.
I was a patient in hospital at the time.

Greybeardy · 01/02/2024 17:53

Standard instructions are to not drive/operate heavy machinery/sign important docs for at least 24 hrs and that you should have a sensible adult with you for that time.

Butningembers · 01/02/2024 17:58

Thanks everyone. Haven't got my letter through yet so wondered what the protocol was and thought I'd better reschedule plans sooner rather than later if I had to Smile

Was told no driving, looking after small children, working or signing important documents for 24 hours after. It hit me really hard the last time (had been unwell before) and there's no way I could have driven the following day. I didn't even get out of bed except for the loo!

Hope all goes well.

I felt completely normal about 10 minutes after they had wheeled me out

You will be absolutely fine by the next day
