I'm worried that I'm starting with this problem. I began to have jaw pain about a week ago and it got worse so I assumed I was starting with a dental abscess. I've been to the dentist this morning who has examined me and done x rays. The x rays haven't showed anything up. The pain is further back in the jaw, but it goes along the jaw line. It's like a tingly burning pain which then becomes a sort of deep ache. It wears off then starts again. Eating, drinking and talking seems to be setting it off. I haven't injured my jaw and I have no disease in that area. I'm in my 50s. It's only on one side.

Does this sound like it might be TN? How can I know before I approach the GP? What should I be looking out for?

I have exactly the same and pain in my teeth, have you seen anyone about yours?
My GP seems useless and dentist says nothing wrong dentally.

Oh I found out that I had an infection in my ear and throat and it was affecting the nerves in my jaw. I've managed to get on top of it and the jaw pain has largely subsided now, apart from the odd twinge.

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems. Could you see a different GP? Find out as much as you can about TN then present them with the info and how it relates to your pain and ask if they can prescribe something for nerve pain to see if it helps. TN is incredibly painful and you need help. Keep on at them.

I was going to reply that yes this sounds like nerve pain and could be caused by TN

If they say no dental cause then believed them. I had a tooth out and another filled unnecessarily because the cause was actually TN which I've now had for 10 years.

I read that this happens to a lot of people before they're diagnosed with TN.

Depressingly so. Some people lose multiple teeth before it is realised that they weren't the problem.

I had this for years. It was horrible and I had all sorts of investigations, scans, dental visits-. The pain would get so bad I would be physically sick.
in the end I managed with massage of the jaw bone muscles. I eventually realised that it was set off when I bit on something too hard- like I wasn’t expecting it to be there- think stone in an olive.
I would feel the most awful soreness in my upper of lower jaw muscles. It was just like really bad tooth ache and was really scary.
might be worth a try for you. Tension in the jaw muscles can cause a lot of issues nerve wise.

Did you find anything that helps you if you don’t mind my asking?
