Hello, my mum had ovarian cancer in her early 50s. I’m now in my early 40s. Do you know if there are any checks offered to those with a direct relative who has had ovarian or breast cancer?

You can ask your GP to refer you for genetic counselling where they look at history and risk factors. My mum had ovarian cancer and in one area I had annual blood tests and internal scans. Apparently this is no longer best practice so I have been having annual mammograms since I turned 40 and will essentially always have bloods and scans any tummy issues or irregular bleeding.

Ca125 blood test result is abnornal in some of those with breast cancer / ovarian cancer
.thats an easy blood test to ask gp for

Ovarian cancer is often silent but bloating can be a sign

Thanks my mum’s was found secondary to a large cyst. She had a hysterectomy to remove the cyst and the washings were sent off and a 1C cancer found. So lucky she had the cyst and a good surgeon who sent the washings off to be tested. Her Ca125 showed no indications of cancer. That’s why she didn’t have a specialist cancer surgeon, but luckily still a very good surgeon who saved her life.

Glad she had a very good surgeon
