Numb hands and pins and needles

I was wondering if anyone could help!
For the past couple of weeks my fingers/hands are constantly numb with pins and needles. It’s worse on a night and when I’m laid down and seems to only affect certain fingers. My hands have started to ache from it. I have just had a baby so thought maybe I’ve trapped a nerve from holding him all the time in the same position? But unsure and not sure how to stop it happening! Thank you!!

It sounds like Carpal tunnel. I got it in late pregnancy and it went around 6 weeks after birth. It’s something to do with having extra fluid in your body which squashes the nerve.

Wrist supports helped a little.

Best to see a GP

I had this and it was a nerve trapped in my neck - it suddenly got a lot worse - really painful all down my arm and hand. See a physio or a chiropractor. You can get a special contoured memory foam pillow which helps at night, Tilt your head away from the affected side to relieve symptoms (can do this after turning your head 45 degrees in either direction). Also Bruggers relief position. If it does get painful - ice on your shoulder area helps and codeine. Hopefully it won’t come to that but I know the tingling is really annoying. I also have a different mouse for the computer when I thought it was my wrist and I think that did help a bit.

Which fingers does it affect? If thumb index and middle then it’s likely to be carpal tunnel (see gp, wear wrists points at night). If it’s ring and little finger then it’s the ulnar nerve, and may be an issue at elbow or neck (see gp for referral to physio or self refer if your area allows it).

It seems to affect my middle and ring finger the most, but if I rest on my elbow it feels like I’ve hit my funny bone and sends pins and needles down my arm? So it could be something in my elbow?
Thank you so much!

See your GP as it could be multiple things.

I have had pins and needles, plus numbness, on and off when lying down for about 12 years now. I’ve been told different things by GP’s, physio and neurologist - from carpal tunnel, thoracic outlet syndrome to sensory migraine which is the latest diagnosis.

I tried to see a GP when I was in complete agony with this and I spoke to the receptionist who told me to self refer to the physio and go to the pharmacist for pain relief. So yes, a GP would probably be great (maybe?) but I wonder how many people would get that far with tingling fingers or how long you might have to wait.

Seaoftroubles · 29/01/2024 18:06

Almost certainly Carpal Tunnel, classic symptoms. I had this during and after each of my pregnancies and this is common apparently. You can get relief by getting a wrist splint from your pharmacy, you need the splint with the metal bar to keep your wrist straight.

Exactly this happened to me also! So much carrying and cuddling. I also realised my sleeping position was off. Hope you feel better soon and congrats on the new baby Flowers.

Thank you so much everyone for your comments they have been super helpful!
I will definitely try a wrist strap and see if that helps 🙏🏼 X

I had those symptoms and it was cubital tunnel syndrome

A elbow splint / strap might be better than a wrist one. Definitely sounds like an ulnar nerve issue. GP can refer you to have tests done.

I had similar but the whole lower half of my forearm and hand was numb and touching the pointy part of the elbow closest to my body would send jolts down my arm. Ended up needing surgery.
