Numb hands at night

Hi all, asking for advice. I keep waking up at night with numb hands. It affects both hands. I usually go to sleep on my side but wake up on my back. If I lie with my hands on my stomach to avoid any pressure etc it still happens. I have to hang my arms over the side of the bed to get the feeling back! It almost feels circulatory. I did go to my GP and she suggested an orthopaedic pillow - is that actually going to help? It felt like a cop out somehow. It's been going on for over a year now. I'm pretty fit ans healthy otherwise, I eat well, blood pressure is good. Does anyone have any experience of this?

If the splints aren't doing anything, what could it be?

Actually, just re-read. I think I might need a blood test then. I've finally got my referral to the specialist menopause unit on 30th April after 13 months of waiting, so I'll bring it up then

That's a long way off
Did you check your bloods at GP for hypothyroidism and bit d deficiency??? Surely that would be first point of call.
Some pharmacies will do a thyroid test for a fee if you are prepared to expedite a diagnosis.
Yes it's linked to peri but it's a separate issue too ..my thyroid was affected long before peri menopause.

I’ve had this for years. I pinned it down to when I was sleeping with my hands above my heart. I’ve learnt to always keep my hands on the mattress - it was hard to figure out how to get comfy mind! I don’t think about it now though. If I wake up with numb hands I just move them down and fall asleep again.

It happened recently whilst I was having a procedure done at the doctors. I had to be laid down, but arm up. I mentioned it and both clinicians were unconcerned and said it’s a circulatory thing that wasn’t particularly unusual.

I have got an appointment at the GP to discuss HRT next week. This wasn’t on my list of symptoms. I’ll add it on as a query.

Carpal tunnel. Went when I lost weight, came back when I put the weight back on!

Who knew that fat wrists was a thing?

Gp should refer you. They test the nerves and if it’s significantly nipping the nerves they can operate. Common procedure.

When I spoke to the GP, she told me to get an orthopaedic pillow! That didn't help either surprisingly 😒

I'll look into blood tests. I need to be frugal at the moment though so can't afford to pay a lot

This morning the fingers on my right hand were so useless I couldn't undo the velcro on the splint on my left hand 😔

I have this occasionally, can be rather painful and disrupts sleep. I'm menopausal and it's one of many symptoms that we endure

What about a problem with your neck vertebrae. I had tingling hands and lower arms and saw various consultants. I even had nerve conduction tests. A mmi (not sure that's the correct abbreviation) showed irritated nerve roots in my neck. It's not 100% certain that's the whole cause but it might be. A 5 day max dose of ibuprofen helps a lot but only on Drs advice obviously
