If you take magnesium to improve sleep...

What type of magnesium do you take, and how much?

I'm having trouble staying asleep and everyone recommends magnesium but I'm not sure which type/ strength to buy.

Magnesium glycanate

HollyKnight · 27/01/2024 11:48

Be careful taking magnesium supplements. Especially over a long period of time. It can cause heart issues.

But is this down to long term use or from taking too high a dose?

I use a magnesium oil spray on my legs every night, but then I have restless legs. Also an Epsom salts bath once a week.

They can also resolve heart issues though so it depends on what the OP's baselines are and whether she's been recommended to get them by a medical professional.
If she has a deficiency, taking them for a month or two might be enough to resolve the deficiency and get her sleep back to normal (assuming healthy diet).
If she doesn't have a deficiency, they won't solve problems caused by a magnesium deficiency so presumably she will stop taking them within a month or two and find another answer to her problem.

Either/or. Do you know what your baseline is? If your blood magnesium levels are normal - high, supplementing will raise them. When that pushes you out of range will depend on what your levels are at now.

She didn't mention deficiency or heart issues though. She wants to take them because people said it helps with sleep. I took them for PVCs until my blood results said I had to stop. If she's not having her levels monitored, then she's putting herself at risk.

@SisterMichaelsHabit

Yes, this is what I'm thinking and it's why I asked about strength.

@HollyKnight

Thanks for the warning. I am conscious of over dosing on supplements but have also found that GPs are generally not great with stuff like this. I have been twice and was given sleeping tablets both times and not offered a blood test.

The problem is GPs wont give any advice or guidance on anything like this, they just point blank refuse to discuss it, so you are left stumbling in the dark

I take magnesium supplements to support with constipation but they also do seem to help with sleep and anxiety too

I wasnt aware of the heart issue, another thing to worry over! However Im going to get myself some private blood tests which check about a billion different things and magnesium is one of them so hopefully I will keep track that way if I do one every year

purplehue · 27/01/2024 12:21

I take magnesium and zinc x2 per day at night. It helps me sleep better and relieves constipation.

Yeah, they're quite useless with anything even vaguely related to mental health. Mine won't even give sleeping pills. They just tell you to try exercise or mindfulness.

Bert2e · 27/01/2024 12:30

How old are you OP? HRT sorted my sleep issues.

  1. I had a blood test a year ago to check if I was perimenopausal and was told I wasn't.

The Better You spray. It gets straight into the blood stream and is great on sore or achy muscles not to mention restless legs.

Works a charm.

thedancingparrot · 27/01/2024 12:34

I use a magnesium butter from sweet bee organics- just put a pea sized amount on the bottom of my feet when I goto bed.

Blood tests wont show you whether you are or not, unless you're incredibly lucky and you get tested on the exact day that your levels are are the peri levels

Almost impossible to manage, you would have to have bloods done every day of your cycle

ArtfulReader · 05/10/2024 22:41

Sweet Bee magnesium butter is working wonders for me. Pop it on the bottom of your feet before bed. Kids can use it too.
