It's another poo one, want to go, feels soft, body won't push it out

First off I'll say I'm booked in to see a doctor next week.

I became a bit constipated over the Christmas period which at first I thought was because I'd I been working in the office a lot and hadn't been able to respond to my body's cues (I'm not great in public toilets). I usually go around 9am like clockwork once everyone's left the house.

I noticed it had been about three days without a movement or urge so I dealt with that with a suppository. Since then, though, I seem to have lost my body's natural urge to go.

I feel my rectum is full, and when it does come out it's soft, but even then I have to exert a lot of effort to get it out. Unlike previously when my body would just do its thing. I do feel like there's pressure in my vagina and my vulva bulges when I'm trying to go, but putting a thumb or fingers up my vagina to push back any bulges doesn't seem to help.

It's really getting me down. The amount of times I go to the toilet thinking "this is it" but, nothing, is heartbreaking. And I can feel it right there. My body just doesn't seem to be doing its thing.

I'm taking lactulose and I'll get some movicol/laxido too (I've read somewhere else that these shouldn't be taken together, so I won't do that), but the problem isn't, I don't think, in my bowel but rather the the transit down from there.

Do anyone have any experience/advice? If it's relevant, I have three children (youngest 8), all vsgunal/assisted deliveries. No problems until now.

Prunes are your friend here, and coffee.
Get a tin of prunes and have 8 a day until you’re sorted. And have a good strong coffee, then go as soon as you feel the movement.

HungerlosMcMungerlos · 27/01/2024 07:53

There's me starting my day with a hot water and lemon cleanse when I should be on the strong stuff! I've been eating apricots but I presume they're not as good as prunes? I'll put some in my shopping bag today.

Kiwis and Kefir. Potty stool and the moo sound. Yes really. It works. I’ll see if I can find a link.

DustyLee123 · 27/01/2024 07:56

No, prunes are magic! I find them better than medication personally.

DustyLee123 · 27/01/2024 07:56

Oh, and get some pears. I found they make me go too.

Oh, and get some pears. I found they make me go too.

It was a doctor on TikTok who mentioned pears, then it clicked that yes, they do make me go.

HungerlosMcMungerlos · 27/01/2024 08:00

To be honest, and tmi, I did go shortly after making this post. But it felt underwhelming and once again it required a lot of effort from me to get it out even though it was soft. But at least it was a movement. I just miss my old sausage poos, that my body just expelled without exertion or assistance!

Pears have the same effect on my youngest DS. He will go one hour after eating a pear, like clockwork

HungerlosMcMungerlos · 27/01/2024 08:14

The link was useful CornishTiger. I do wonder if I damaged my pelvic floors when I was straining a lot when I first became constipated. I'm kicking myself for not just persevering with stool softeners rather than trying to force it out.

I'll also try the pears, prunes and kiwis.

Could it be a rectocele? 50% of women have rectoceles after birth and it means the poo will bulge in to the vagina rather than coming straight out.

CornishTiger · 27/01/2024 08:30

I feel your pain @HungerlosMcMungerlos years of struggling here. I’m going to double up on my pelvic floors again!

caringcarer · 27/01/2024 08:34

Get GP to do a blood test for thyroid. This happened to me years ago and it turned out to be under active thyroid. I was given Levothyroxine to take. Fresh orange juice with bits in makes me go and keeps it soft too.

HungerlosMcMungerlos · 27/01/2024 08:40

I was wondering about a rectocele SallyWD. I'm not sure how up on women's issues the doctor will be, so I've also made an enquiry with a gynae physiotherapist. I'm trying to up my pelvic floor exercises, but I've also read that I could be making it worse if the problem is that my pelvic floors are too tight! Hard to know what to do for the best. I'm really kicking myself for all the straining I did when my constipation began because I'm sure I've damaged something.

I did have a recent blood test as part of an MOT and there were no concerns about thyroid, but might be worth a check.

Here’s the website my physio recommended ages ago.

https://www.pelvicexercises.com.au/relieve-constipation/

No matter how I mmmm or oooooo my sides and belly do not bulge out the way the instructor suggests 😂

My sides and belly don't even move when I mmmmmmoooooo

HungerlosMcMungerlos · 27/01/2024 12:30

I think I can feel my sides expand when I mmmmmm and I think there's a slight bearing down feeling when I ooooo. It remains to be seen whether this helps with a bowel movement though! Possibly not if it's stuck where it's not supposed to be...

Milk of magnesia. That will send it through without you having to strain.

MadamVastra · 27/01/2024 17:39

I have never seen so many poo threads as lately

ThePoshUns · 27/01/2024 17:44

I was about to say the same @MadamVastra

Mimi1212 · 28/05/2025 22:14

Please can you give an update on your progress and what has worked. Hoping that you're feeling much better now!

Very disheartening when you feel a loss of power to evacuate your bowels...asking for a friend...
