I’d anyone else completely furious about age related eyesight loss?

Honestly it was the one thing my body actually had going for it and now my eyesight is a sad, blurry affair. I spend my whole time looking for my reading glasses and I hate it so much.

I used to do a lot of close up creative work that just isn’t the same now my eyesight has gone. I put my make up on each morning and I’ve no idea if I’m blending stuff well anymore it’s a bit hit and miss I think and I don’t have time to really scrutinise it. if there are chin hairs I can’t see them. I really want to try the eye drops that have supposedly been developed for this, but they don’t seem to be easily available in this country yet.

if i could buy new eyeballs I absolutely would.

Not sure if I feel furious but I’m definitely pissed off. After being short sighted since 11 and wearing contact lenses since I was 15 I had to move to varifocal contacts about 10 years ago. Then about 5 years my eyes decided that these didn’t work so after many trials I know have a prescription that kind of works for distance but I have to wear reading glasses with them - so I’ve pretty muxh stopped wearing lenses and am now in varifocal glasses all the time as they work better.

Between that and the joint pain I seem to have developed down one side I’m really fed up.

biscuitnut · 25/01/2024 21:51

Same here, I am 50 and up until 45ish had really good eyesight. I am now blind as a bat. The only way I can put make up on is with a magnifying mirror. Forever losing and looking for my bloody specs. Yes it’s a pain!

DustyLee123 · 25/01/2024 21:53

I didn’t realise that glasses got so dirty until I had to start wearing them.

Starlightstarbright3 · 25/01/2024 21:55

Put your readers on to find the chin hairs .. although you may want to stay in ignorance

HerRoyalNotness · 25/01/2024 21:57

Yep 👋🏼 rapidly going downhill. Also on meds that can make me blind. Great times.
Currently wearing scratched glasses from chucking them in my camera bag. Can’t seem to take photos while wearing glasses. Persevering with them so I don’t have to replace them before I need to, although I probably should ugh.

can lasik help with age related blurriness? Does anyone still do that?

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 25/01/2024 21:58

yep, I’m with you. Last 3 annual eye tests show macular degeneration and I’ve been sent away with an exercise to test for its progression. Very strong driving/distance glasses and readers for close work.

Hate the evidence of the body starting to falter

AIstolemylunch · 25/01/2024 22:03

Yes so annoying. And what annoys me most is it's not the right type of eyesight issue for laser correction, which I'd happily pay for. I don't really understand why for opthalmologists reading. I've got friends the same age as me who wore glasses since teens who now have great eyesight as had laser correction in their thirties, whereas inhad perfect vision untilate 40s and now have to grope around for reading glasses to even put my ticket through the train barriers or read a menu. It's so annoying. I can't get on with contacts either as one eye has astigmatism and it just itches and makes my eyes run, no matter how many brands I've tried. I actually think it's the worse thing about ageing for me.

GetWhatYouWant · 25/01/2024 22:04

I was furious when my perfect eyesight began to deteriorate 12 years ago at 47. I'm always dropping and losing my reading glasses, feel like I should wear them on a chain, they're on and off dozens of times a day. I do get prescription ones because they seem better than cheap off the shelf ones and I can still do sewing and other detailed crafts with a good pair of glasses. Re the make up and chin hairs, get a double sided mirror that has a 10x magnifying side, I can no longer put on eye make up without it.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 25/01/2024 22:16

I certainly wouldn't say I'm furious, and at the age of 64 I am quite looking forward to the arrival of my progressive lenses as I am so sick of putting readers on, taking them off, losing them etc. every damn day.

I had been thinking my eyes were going downhill rapidly and worrying until the optometrist told me that I wouldn't legally be required to wear glasses for driving so things really aren't so bad, and the issues which sent me for an eye test have since resolved themselves.

Mossstitch · 25/01/2024 22:17

Look on the bright side........you can't see your wrinkles 😉

HappenstanceMarmite · 25/01/2024 22:25

Bloody does my swede in. Worst thing is when going around shops… can’t have them on whilst walking but, oh, I need to read that label. On go the glasses, then off again to walk over to those products… glasses back on to see the price etc 😡

mynameiscalypso · 25/01/2024 22:27

I've just turned 40 but have had constant issues with my eyes for the last few months. It's really getting me down and there's nothing the consultant says he can do about it. I spent about an hour ranting to my younger colleagues in the office today about how everything turns to shit as you get older.

ManicureRed · 25/01/2024 22:28

Yes yes yes! And I hate it when people younger than me say that they have perfect eyesight so they won’t have problems when they get older. Well my eyesight was bloody perfect at 45 too!

Lesina · 25/01/2024 22:30

I’m quite happy with my 55 year old eyes needing specs. It makes me look clever.

it was when my previously perfect teeth developed a cavity which my dentist explained was due to ‘ age related demineralisation’ that made me want to cry… :(

Ifonlyiweretaller · 25/01/2024 22:37

I have at least 8 Pairs of glasses in the house - some cheap readers, the others prescriptions (I keep the old prescription ones when I get new as they're useful back-ups). However I'm sure they all have magnets in them, as they all seem to end up together in the same room, and always the one furthest from here I am!

God, this. I give myself headaches leaving them on to walk from the aisle where I was looking at something over to the counter to where I'll need them to see Google pay on my phone. It's so bloody irritating.

I think I'm going to try putting one contact lens in.

stargirl1701 · 25/01/2024 22:42

No, I expected it.

I had laser eye surgery at 29 and I was told I would likely still reading glasses at around 45. I had 15 odd years of good vision which I am grateful for.

I miss being able to snuggle with book.

Throwawayaccountonaccountofthis · 25/01/2024 22:49

I wear contacts for distance but now constantly have readers perched on my head at home. I have readers for work, readers in my handbag and I even have readers in the car!
I tried to do a jigsaw earlier but it’s a tricky one with small details and some small writing. I gave up because, even with my readers on, I couldn’t see. I’m going to have to find the magnifying glass.

DawnBreaks · 25/01/2024 22:49

I have one contact lens for distance and one for reading. Works absolutely fine! I know this doesn't work for everyone but it's been great for me, for the last 10 years or so.

orangelotus · 25/01/2024 22:50

I've always had to wear glasses was the child with the patch over one eye for years at school.
I feel so lucky that glassy were available to me as I would have been unable to live a normal life without them.
So I'm used to them but I love going on holiday and would love to wear sunglasses but despite having had may pairs of prescription sunglasses at great expense none of them have ever been effective. Still if there's something to have wrong at least it's correctable so I feel lucky

cerisepanther73 · 25/01/2024 22:52

Yep know the feeling

Ursulla · 25/01/2024 22:53

It is annoying.

Tell you what's a real shitter though is tiny fucking print on packaging. Just ... why??! This happens to everyone. At any point in time there will be a substantial portion of the population who can't read tiny text. Or red on black text. Or pale on pale text. So don't use it!

I was looking at a facial cleansing cream in boots the other day, marketed as being for menopausal age skin, which I have, so I'm their target market. But I couldn't read any of the shitting info on the box - tiny text, pale on a slightly less pale background. It's really stupid on their part, to have packaging that excludes the consumer you are wanting to attract. Arseholes.

NewKingontheBlock · 25/01/2024 22:55

Not only do I have ready readers all around the house I also have a magnifying glass in the kitchen as even glasses don’t help when I need to read tiny writing on absolutely everything.

Sanguinello · 25/01/2024 22:56

I miss being able to lie in bed and see my phone clearly without glasses digging into me. I need soft pillow glasses

HappenstanceMarmite · 25/01/2024 23:02

I should really take a pair into the shower, as I can’t read which bottle is shampoo and which is conditioner ffsssss!
