Just how do you get a urine sample from a wriggly 8mo nappy wearing baby...........?

I have sat for the last hour with a plastic cup poised in anticipation - but nothing! Every other time I take dd's nappy off she wees - why not this morning!

I am tempted to sit her in a freezer bag (bottom half only - before you call social services on me ) and let her sit and play and hopefully the wee will come.....

Anyone got any better ideas than that?!

sit her on a potty? in front of cbeebies?

when ds was two days old, midwife and i caught the arc in the disposable teat lids. dont know what we would have doen if a girl.
but at 8 months she can sit, so just put her on a potty. buy one if you dont have one.

is she due a nap? They often pee when they wake up from a nap - I would squat her on a potty then and read a book or watch telly or sing a song for five minutes

meep · 20/03/2008 09:48

she's napping just now - so fingers crossed for a post nap wee!

No potty here yet - I did sit her in a big plastic bowl for a while hoping the cold would set her off!

We've had lots of song singing and tickling! I gave her her morning milk with her nappy on and she'd done a wee by the end of it - so I think I will just have to bite the bullet and waterproof the sofa and feed her nappy free next time!

Mrs EEH - I asked about testing the nappy - supposedly they used to do that but disposable nappies taint the readings - and they found that they were giving babies antibiotics when they didn't need them (meep ponders this and thinks that maybe disposables are really quite nasty things and ....... hmmmmmmmmmmmm!)

2 suggestions:

  1. The doctor can give you a little bag that you tape around the genitals and this will catch whatever she wees (you can put a nappy on over the bag to stop her pulling the bag off). I used that once with ds1.
  1. I was told by another doctor that the bladder fills 20 minutes after a drink, so give her a drink and then sit her on a bowl or run round after her with a pot about 20 mins later.

There are better ways of spending your morning, I know! Good luck.

the freezer bag option is looking tempting again - maybe I can fashion it into the sort of bag you are describing dumbledoresGirl!

If she is asleep now, would it be worth ringing your surgery and asking them if they have a urine collection bag for an baby girl? I am surprised you were not offered it in the first place.

But otherwise, in your situation, I think the plastic freezer bag sounds like a reasonable idea. Just hope she doesn't poo first!

emma1977 · 20/03/2008 10:01

Either the adhesive bag or put some cotton wool balls in the nappy and squeeze the wee (while wearing rubber gloves) into a collection bottle.

meep · 20/03/2008 10:08

that is an excellent idea emma - I will pad out her nappy with cotton wool - I take it they only need a teeny bit of wee for testing?

DumbledoresGirl - it was the out of hours clinic at the hospital that told us to get a sample - no bag on offer

I have actually found a picture of one on the internet - I will need to get my Blue Peter skills in action with my freezer bag and some "stickyback plastic"!

I will let you know the outcome of all my experiments!

Poor dd - she seems to find the whole thing hilarious (apart from the sitting in the cold plastic bowl - that did not go down well!)

Also - explaining to my boss why I had to take the day off was quite amusing - there wasn't much he could say to that!

The surgery might still have them...

But anyway, you sound like a creative woman. I hope you post back here after you have succeeded to let us know how you did it.

LOL at finding urine collection bags on the internet. Google is a wonderful thing isn't it?

emma1977 · 20/03/2008 11:21

Aaaaah....I've worked in paediatrics.

I know all the tricks for getting wee out of kids!

meep · 20/03/2008 12:07

the plastic bag didn't work - there was some wee in it but not enough to pour!

We're on teh cotton wool this time round!

If that fails it will be the bare bottom bottle at 2.30pm!

There is the Newcastle urine collection system - is basically cooton wool filled pad to put inside nappy, then a syringe to transfer urine. You can get them form the hospital/doctors.

They do say that you should put the nappy inside a nappy that is put on inside out (so no tainting form nappy chemicals).

am a pro at this - have done severasl for dd1 (now 3.7) and about to embark this afternoon on one for dd2 (13 months), so you have my sympathies.

meep · 20/03/2008 13:37

okay - I now have the tiniest amount of wee - about 1/2 a centimetre squeezed from the cotton wool!

Will that be enough or am I going to have to go for the bare bum milk feed??!!

OP posts:
EachPeachPearMum · 20/03/2008 13:56

Hah! Hope that worked!
FWIW we had to get dd to give a sample (!!!)
at 8mo in A&E - it took 3 nappy-free hours of holding a squirmy, howling baby to get a sample.
Yes- it is very difficult, and they do it plenty when you don't want to catch one!

kbaby · 20/03/2008 15:07

The hospital gave us a sanitary towel to put in her nappy and take that back to them, they then used a syringe to siphon out the wee. Give the hosp a ring and see if they can sugest what to do

meep · 20/03/2008 17:37

Success at approximately 3.30pm!
She had a big feed then I sat with my cup poised..............nothing!
Eventually resorted to sitting her in a big bowl and after 1 hour she wee'd. She thought it was great (until the wee ) cos she had my constant attention and song singing!
It has actually been a lovely afternoon!
Thanks for all your help!
