Head Pain For A Month - Scared

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help please?

I noticed I had a headache/ pain in my head at New Year.

I didn't think much of it as I get mild headaches a couple of times a week which paracetamol and Ibuprofen sort out straight away.

I then realised that this one was not shifting. I began to wake up with it and it would last all day. Painkillers dampen it but it's still there...

It's in one specific place on the top left of my head. It is a dull ache but with sharpness every few seconds.

I have seen two different Dr's, the first saying tension headache with which I disagreed. It is constant and does not fit with tension headache symptoms.

So I saw another GP who ordered bloodtests. I was supposed to go back in a month but the pain is so draining, that I went back yesterday. A lot of my blood results were abnormal, but he's only treating me with folic acid.

He's sent me away with amitriptyline *twice a day and to come back in 3 or 4 weeks if no improvement.

I am so worried and scared. I struggle to get through every hour. I've thought about A&E but know how snowed under they are. Although it's not an emergency, to me it feels like it is.

I don't really have any other symptoms apart from feeling shaky all the time, but this could be from how upset I am making myself.

I'm not 100% sure why I'm posting, but just hope someone who has experienced something similar could put my mind at rest 🥺

Thank you in advance and apologies if I've posted in the wrong place or if I offend anyone xx

Have you had an eye test?

PragmaticWench · 25/01/2024 14:07

Is it worse upright compared to laying down or the opposite ? Are there times of day it improves?

Asking as I had a terrible headache last year that I did eventually get sent into A&E with, by my GP, and they were very kind to me and not dismissive.

I've had one fairly recently (September-ish) but I've booked another for Monday just in case xx

Hi
Thank you so much for your reply.
It's better lying down, but still there. It only improves after painkillers otherwise it stays the same all day.
It's just so constant, all day every day. I can't see an end to it 😢 I'm convinced my right side feels weaker today and I've started to feel sick all the time (am hoping that is the folic acid).
What did they do at hospital? Did you have a scan? Xx

Mine didn't improve with painkillers and ended up being a CSF leak. The hospital kept me in for a week but they were really thorough checking pressure on optic nerves, blood pressure changes on standing, any limb weakness etc.

PragmaticWench · 25/01/2024 17:39

Meant to say, I had different symptoms to you but I'd be pushing for further checks if I were you as this doesn't sound normal for you.

Thank you. I already feel like such a nuisance having been to see him twice within a week as well as the other GP initially 😕 He definitely wants me to try a few weeks on amitriptyline, which is fine. But surely as soon as I come off them again, the problem will still be there 😕 xx

My worst headache was 12 days before I saw the doctor. The last few days of that I needed to be in the dark all the time and also vomited a couple of times. It was at the point where I was rubbing voltarol gel into my head as paracetamol and ibuprofen were doing nothing that I decided I really ought to see the doc Blush
Was sent straight to A&E and after CT and lumbar puncture was diagnosed with viral meningitis.

Surprised they're medicating you without carrying out further tests. Hope you feel better soon @GlassHalfEmpty70 Flowers
