Possible urine infection - quick question pls

Can someone tell me if a urine infection would get steadily worse or if symptoms could come and go for quite a while eg over a month or 2 (high temp, DD (2.5) saying she is sore but only intermittently, no appetite)?

Thought ear infections were causing temperature flare up every other week but now GP not so sure as ears currently look ok. Sample went in today but wont hear anything til way after easter, so need to decide whether to go back to gp tomorrow.

thanks (sorry been posting rather alot lately :-( )

alice

Can do either. I'd take her back to the GP. Where is the pain? is she going to the loo more? does the wee sting? is it cloudy or discoloured? Does she have to go to the loo in the night? does she have to go quickly?

bossybritches · 19/03/2008 17:48

Could come & go if its a low grade infection. (she says helpfully )

As it's a BH weekend I'd go back & see the GP s you don't have to go to the out of hours service if things get worse.

Alternatively just give her regular Calpol/Ibuprofen & LOADS to drink to flush out her bladder, & wait for the results to come back.

fruitymum · 19/03/2008 17:51

It could linger on, did they not dip it before it was sent? This is the usual practice - the GP surgery should be able to get lab results by Friday - if you phone in then and ask if they are back. In the meantime regular paracetemol, fluids and cranberry juice if she likes it - nice mixed with raspberry. There are lots of viral illnesses on the go at the mo which may be the cause of her temp.
Hope she is well soon.

thanks avenanap. Its difficult as she isnt potty trained yet. We had an absolute nightmare getting a sample this morning - took over an hour on the potty in front of TV (as she has never done a wee on potty - though happily sits on it). It didnt look discoloured or cloudy but i had just got her to drink quite alot of water!

Has had high temp every other week since beg Jan. Also occasionally says her front bottom is sore if you are wiping her (despite no sign of rash) but the she seems fine for a week or 2. So i never made a connection until GP said we had better check, as i thought it was her ears. This afternoon she is occasionally saying her nappy is sore ie somewhere inside it and she has had temp of 39.5 last 2 mornnings (settles with calpol). Wont eat.

I am assuming they will be reluctant to do anything without results (and i dont want her having unnecesary AB's).

The same symptoms have been going on for such a while that i was just wondering if UTI;s can flare up and then subside like that or not (or if they get steadily worse in which case i doubt that this is her problem)

thanks bossybritches and fruitymum,

No they didnt dip it but then i couldnt get to see a gp today when i took sample back. I was told by GP yesterday it would be after easter (2-3 days) and receptionist said it was a week!

Maybe i should go in again tomorrow with another sample (if i can get one and ask them to dip it? What will that tell them before the main analysis is back?). I assumed they werent open friday?

Realise it could just be a virus (as she does have cold) - just concerned because of the recurrent nature of the symptoms (as i said, fever every other week since end dec/beg jan)

unfortunately she wont do juice of any kind so no hope with the cranberry i'm afraid!

The water would have flushed it out! What does it look like in the morning? UTI's are frequent in girls because of their anatomy and can be quite nasty. I think that you need to take her to see a doctor again. Explain to him/her that you have been giving her alot to drink so when the sample was taken it was clear but tell them what it normally looks like. She may have a UTI or a kidney infection, which will require investigation at the hospital. They don't normally give out antibiotics unless the UTI has been confirmed.

I would take her to the childrens emergency department of your local childrens hospital to get her checked by a paediatrician, especially if she has a temp like this and is not eating. It is probably not as bad as you think it is but it's better to check. You could also take her back to the GP but if you take her to the hospital they can do the urine test there and you can get her treated earlier if there is any infection. It may be a virus, there's no way to tell.

I hope she's feeling better soon.

fruitymum · 19/03/2008 18:05

if you phone at 8am you should get an appt tomorrow, if you can see the practice/treatment or minor illness nurse if you can't see a doc, take a sample with you it will give a good indication of any infection but not tell you what the bugs are or which anti biotic the bugs are sensitive to - its hard getting a good sample when they are still in nappies if you could give her a wee wash with plain water and sit her on the potty in front of Noddy or Fifi you may be lucky!

fruitymum · 19/03/2008 18:08

if you feel its an emergency then take her to kids A&E but otherwise try the doc surgery tomorrow - thats what they are there for!

jasperc163 · 19/03/2008 18:11

thanks :-) Would like to avoid a&e if poss - she went in 3 weeks ago to have her chin taped up as she fell off a chair, and ended up with a vomiting bug 8 hrs later !

I used to work in kids emergency, 75% of the kids I saw were not emergencies, children with sore throats, conjunctivitis, you name it. If it were my child I would take her. It's not an emergency but if she needs treatment it's better to get it now rather than leave her until next week and hope for the best. It's not abusing the system, it's what they are there for.

jasperc163 · 19/03/2008 18:42

thanks alot everyone - i appreciate it. It is just difficult because its not obvious if that is what the problem is - i know sometimes it is clear that they are in pain when they pee - its not in this case.

I will just have to see how she is in the morning. Luckily she is at least drinking some of her 'milk' (hypoallergenic formula) so getting some protein and vits.

My DD went to the docs this afternoon because it hurt her to wee (felt like a spike she said). Turns out she has tonsilitis, doc thinks as she had quite a high temp perhaps her wee was coming out hot.

I've to get a sample if it hurts her again, but hoping it doesn't if her temp is under control.

Non stop illness here too. Just about get over one thing and she gets another.

jasperc163 · 19/03/2008 18:51

sorry to hear about your dd NoBunny. It is one thing after the other ....

those of you who've done this. This morning I couldnt get DD to wee in the bottle (no surprise) - drove to surgery and got stroppy receptionist who wouldnt let me speak to anyone at all (i asked what normally happened if you had to get a urine sample before they were potty trained!). So went home again and did the 1hr on potty and then decanted it (did wash potty first). Do you think sample will be ok? I realise not ideal but i didnt have much choice!

OP posts:
avenanap · 19/03/2008 19:07

It should be fine, did you write how you obtained it on the bottle?

jasperc163 · 19/03/2008 19:44

No i didn't :-( I suppose there isnt much i can do now.

Poor DD just refused her milk as well.

Just an update for everyone who gave me advice. Sample was apprently fine which is good news, so it does look as if she is just succumbing to one virus after another! She is doing a bit better this week but will no doubt come down with something else soon (especially as i start work in a week!).

many thanks
alice

My dd says she has a 'sore bottom' and she has in the past had wee infections but have taken her back to GP with a sample ready to make sure they do a dip test as they seem to like to send off a sample, which can take up to 10 days to come back!!!!
I have found (so has my mum) it is sometimes when she has wind or is a bit constipated, was told not to give her so much milk as this can increase chance ofwee infection, so have been diluting it to make sure she hets more water and found she likes 'summer fruits' high juice.
