Dental Implant ??

I think I may be being pathetic but wondered what you would do.

My dentist has advised that a root canal treatment has failed and I need to get the tooth extracted and a dental implant. I am a bit reluctant and wondered what others would do.

The tooth is the first molar at the back on the bottom. It doesn’t hurt. This will be the first tooth I have had taken out and I am a bit nervous. My Dentist referred me to a specialist to have the root canal done : it cost a fortune but wasn’t apparently successful. The dentist first raised this pre Covid but fortunately because of lock down I couldn’t get it done (hooray: there was one benefit). Every time I go for a check up , before she even looks in my mouth it is raised . I have always done everything she has suggested but don’t really feel this is necessary as it doesn’t hurt. I have said this to her. She says if I don’t get it taken out it will damage the other teeth. They have a specialist surgeon based in the clinic who I had a £200 consultation with just before Christmas. He said the tooth should come out and an implant be put in but he said this without even looking at my X-ray (brought in later during the consultation).

I suppose I am nervous. My dentist is very good and I am proud of my teeth . I know I am being silly but I am worried about something going wrong (either during the extraction or implant surgery/ it failing). All seems a bit unnecessary (if I was in pain I wouldn’t think twice but I’m not ) and obviously it’s expensive.
i really like my teeth and have a big smile . Everything else about me is a bit rubbish but this part of me is good and I don’t really want to change it/risk damaging it. Am I just being a vain old fool? What would you do?

I’d get a second opinion tbh.

I had an extraction on my front tooth last year. I have a denture and I’m currently going through the implant process. I’ve had the implant put in, I’n just waiting for the tooth to be attached. Everything’s been great so far.

I’d also recommend getting a second opinion however if there is something wrong with the tooth, just have it taken out. You can either have a denture, bridge or just leave it empty if it’s right at the back and no one can see. You can obviously get an implant but I don’t see why you should spend so much money if it isn’t even bothering you

Thank you for your replies. I have already paid £300 to see my Dentist and the specialist so didn’t really want to keep paying for consultations but maybe I will have to to get another opinion.

i have a very broad smile /when I speak it will show so I would want an implant. I understand that you have to wait a long time between extraction and having the implant. Did you have a false tooth whilst you were waiting for the implant and , if so, was it expensive? (Hope you don’t mind my asking).

@Toothdilemma the recommend wait was 6 months so not too too long. I had a denture whilst waiting to start the process. Luckily, I was on maternity leave at the time so both the extraction and denture was free. The denture would have cost £292 if I wasn’t exempt
