I've had 3 episodes of weird visual disturbance over the past 10 days. Took my BP this morning and is 191/121 so on my way to hospital when the taxi finally gets here. I feel ok, normally fit and healthy, don't smoke or drink, BMI 21, walk over 40 miles a week, cholesterol great, blood sugar great, no diabetes or other issues. I'm 47 and now very anxious. I'm autistic which probably doesn't help matters in terms of anxiety and a lone parent to my ds with a teen Dd too but she has a dad at least. I've been triaged by 999 and they said to get myself to A&E.
I've packed an overnight bag just incase with all the essentials but I'm hoping they will send me away with some medication and instructions to rest or similar. There's hypertension in my family but all much older than me. I'm the healthiest one out of all of us.
Posting for company really and a hand hold.

Did it come down at all in hospital OP?

BPdrama · 19/01/2024 20:52

No, not at all. He took it manually as well as on the automatic machine. But he says it wasn't going up in an uncontrolled way which obviously is good.

My Dh has a similar blood pressure last month. He went to the Dr as he thought he had a chest infection but lungs were clear, however his blood pressure was 185/129!
Dr gave him a good check over and asked about other things, DH said he was very stressed at work. Dr told him he didn’t want to give him medication straight away as wanted to give him a chance to get it down himself.
He too had to take his pressure at home for 7 days but Dr also gave him some advice on de stressing at work. (Taking time out during the day 5-10 mins every few hours of closing eyes, lying down and just thinking of something nice, also getting out for fresh air/walk every day.) It all sounds very simple but it did work. By the end of the week his blood pressure came down to the “normal” range. It really was all caused by stress.

BPdrama · 20/01/2024 14:31

It's almost normal today! Upper limits but so much better than yesterday at 140/90 on average. I've no idea what caused yesterday's huge spike but I'm relieved it's come down. My cold and accompanying headache are worse today so I'm taking it easy as much as possible.

Hi OP stress & anxiety will spike it big time as will pain and being ill . As will caffeine or smoking. Try rest & relaxation, avoid smoking caffeine & alcohol & take pain relief if needed. It may have been a one off. The monitor will pick up if it’s more than one off and GP would consider anti hypertensives like Ramipril. They don’t give them out straight away as often you can spike. In the long run I would look at addressing your anxiety if you’ve not already as it can have so many effects on us physically aswell as mentally.

LizzieSiddal · 20/01/2024 17:47

@BPdrama glad it’s coming down. Continue to take it easy and as others have said address your stress and anxiety.

BPdrama · 20/01/2024 18:25

Unless my exH drops dead or at least moves to the other side of the world or to Jupiter or similar then my stress won't change. I'm already grey rock with him.
I eat pretty healthily, am veggie, walk loads, always out in fresh air, sleep well but not enough really, and I make sure I take time each day during the day for just me before and after work. Job isn't stressful. I don't smoke, don't drink. Bloods all great. Weight is smack bang in the middle of my bmi range. I have chronic pain so that won't change either but it's managed well. I'm going to make sure my light is out by 10.30pm from now on and prioritise sleep over mumsnet 🤣 mumsnet keeps me sane and is my source of humour and support. We are going on holiday in 2 weeks and it will be bliss.

It's much the same today around 140/95 on average but not going over 98 diastolic which is good. Well, better. GP tomorrow. I've rested as much as possible today but am not used to spending much time sat down and feel very lazy.

If today's numbers are more like your norm, you may be able to bring them down with lifestyle changes. See what the GP says, obviously.

BPdrama · 21/01/2024 21:22

There's no lifestyle changes I can make because I already do it all. Unless exH drops dead of course 😬

Gone up to 204/107 now. Dd is home and causing me stress which might be why

I really hope the GP can help tomorriw. I take amlodapine for mine.,

Notfastjustfurious · 21/01/2024 22:53

I had this last Saturday, BP and heart going nuts. I'm already in ramipril which hadn't brought it to normal yet but this was new highs that really scared me. No reason other than still carrying a cold which I've had for a month. Ecg done along with a full check and had to return next day, all was fine and hasn't happened again. Bodies are weird that's the only answer.

Maybe call 111 because of the top number?

Hadalifeonce · 21/01/2024 22:55

I went to A&E for something unrelated, discovered my BP was 212/110, I was given medication then had to wait to make sure it was working. I am now on daily BP meds. I am active, non smoker not overweight so no idea why.

Hiddenvoice · 21/01/2024 23:00

I have high blood pressure, I collapsed when I was 18 due to the sudden drop. I was referred to get a monitor tracing for 24 hours and then sent to a cardiologist to get blood pressure medication. I’m in my thirties and still monitor as it can go even higher or drop very low, even when on medication. I live a very healthy lifestyle and usually manage absolutely fine with no issues so try not to worry too much about it as it won’t be helping your readings.
With your latest reading I would contact 111 and ask their advice. How are you feeling other than the cold?

MotherofTerriers · 21/01/2024 23:07

OP, try buying some beetroot juice, it keeps well unopened and half a pint can reduce your bp a bit so useful if it spikes.

coloursquare · 22/01/2024 11:47

How are you today, OP?

BPdrama · 22/01/2024 14:13

I'm ok thanks and figuring out how to reduce my stress except for the fuckwit ex. I saw the GP and have been given medication and had bloods taken. I've got an ECG later this week. GP was annoyed A&E hadn't started the medication on Friday. Looking at lifestyle they said it's stress and genetics.
I've got 4 main areas of stress. Fuckwit ex is number one but he drives number 2 and 3. Number 4 I'm tackling.

Now you have the meds, hopefully it'll be easily controlled.

BPdrama · 23/01/2024 21:07

I took my first tablet last night. I've been given lisinopril 2.5mg. The pharmacist said to take it at night the first time in case of it dropping it too much even though it's a standard dose for children! I felt fine. Took my next dose at lunchtime today and my BP tonight is 110/70 which is perfect. Knowing it's now ok I feel less anxious. Nothing quite like thinking you might drop dead to make you anxious!
I've prioritised rest since Friday afternoon and although I've walked my normal amount of many miles a day up and down the big hills with the wind and rain bartering at me, in between I've watched tv and made sure I'm in bed early. I figure the housework can wait a few days.

Thank you so much for the hand hold, mumsnet is such a great support when I've needed it.
