Consult GP, or dentist?

Around 6 weeks ago I started experiencing sensitivity in my top front teeth. This developed over time into on/off pain, sensitive gums. I had a dental checkup a month ago, and mentioned it. I questioned whether I might be grinding my teeth at night, but the dentist said my mouth showed no signs of bruxism damage. I went on my way, got some sensodyne, tried to ignore it.
It settles some days and then comes back.

Early this week I visited the dentist again and explained it’s still ongoing. Once again she checked my teeth, and couldn’t find an issue. This morning I woke up with my tongue pressing hard against my front teeth, and sucking my lips in simultaneously. It then occurred to me that during a recent conversation with my husband, I asked if his tongue rests against his front teeth when he isn’t eating or speaking and he said no, and that it isn’t normal for it to do so. Mine does.

I seem to have developed this issue quite recently whilst I’ve been under extreme emotional stress. Do I consult the dentist again regarding what I think is causing it, or go to the GP? Is there anything available that I can wear like a mouth guard, to stop it happening when I sleep?

Dentist. Maybe a different one. My teeth only started showing signs once I’d been grinding for a while. It started during a stressful time.

I do wear a mouth guard at night, it took some getting used to but was a life saver.

My tongue is currently against my front teeth and roof of my mouth. It doesn’t fit on the bottom of my mouth, I understood it was normal to be on the roof of the mouth generally though, where does your DH’s tongue sit ?

I work in a GP surgery go to a dentist a GP won't see you for anything related to teeth or gums, they're not insured.

Dentist, also do those scans that show your teeth and jaw bones. I did that recently and it showed my jaw out of line and dentist noticed the clicking that it must be from long term tooth grinding/jaw clenching - but my teeth don't actually show much, if any, damage. She wasn't able to tell until she heard clicking and saw my scan/xray.

Dentist wrote down two colleagues who specifically deal with this and I guess I'll be making appointments to go see one of them. These colleagues make mouth guards and align the jaw or something with the guards? Idk yet as I haven't been.

Please note - I've never used an NHS dentist so I'm unsure if NHS has this service.

He says it rests against the roof of his mouth, but doesn’t actually touch his teeth - I was wondering if I’ve got an abnormal length tongue after he said that?! 😂

I’m not, no. But was in the past, very briefly. What’s the link?

When I was first put on it, after I got over the nausea, I was aware that I was clenching my jaw a lot of the time. Thought it could not be related but apparently it is!

Thank you all. I rang the dentist this morning, told the receptionist I believe I’m clenching at night and requested an appointment to have guard impressions taken and she’s booked me in for Monday. Phew!
