Is it worth going to the GP with suspected PCOS?

DD 17. Still has irregular periods, persistent acne and unable to lose weight despite heroic efforts. She's had blood tests for thyroid. It could be PCOS but is there any point in pursuing as it looks like most women are told to go away and lose weight or put on BCP and that's it. Do they do any tests and is it worth having on your medical records regardless?

It is probably worth getting it on her records.

She can ask GP for help with the symptoms that are bothering her. Whether she gets help will depend on the GP.

I found going on the pill helped with the acne and periods. Not the weight 🥲

If she can get into a habit of healthy eating and regular exercise nos that will help throughout her life.

Later on it's worth knowing when she is TTC that it might prove challenging. Even then NHS will still expect her to try for a year before doing anything 🥲

Further down the line it increases her likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes and hypertension and once she gets to her 40s they might want to check these things annually.

What do Gps typically do? Are there any tests

I was around DDs age when my DM read about PCOS and recognised that's what I'd had.
IIRC my GP did some blood tests and referred for an ultrasound to confirm PCOS. Recommend the pill for symptom management but anything hormonal was horrific. The weight struggle has been difficult, now mid-30s and it's only getting harder.

Having the diagnosis meant I was able to get metformin when TTC without a fight. Some trusts will fund other treatment like hair removal if facial hair is an issue.
