orthodontic retainers?

ds had his braces removed about 6months ago and given retainers to wear for the rest of his life. I was bit put out by this as I dont recall being told this before agreeing to the treatment.
Anyway, was told not to lose them as I will have to pay for replacement.
Now ds says they are not fitting properly and lower one falls off. His bottom teeth are moving.
I need to get him back to the dentist but dreading them telling me it is our fault/responsibility.
Has anyone else had a problem with these?

He has to wear them forever??

Has he been clicking them on and off with his tongue when bored in class? This makes them loose. DS2 did this a lot and the dentist gave him a good telling off but just repaired them.

I have dd's on household insurance because she likes to take them out to eat, I'm scared that she'll leave them somewhere. She sometimes thinks one is rubbing, but it stops before we make an appointment for the orthodontist..

RTKangaDYSONMummy · 19/03/2008 10:35

do you mean the moulds that he is to wear at night or do you mean the wire kind that look like a brace

btw you could ask for a wire to be put at the back of his teeth permantly

sasquatch · 19/03/2008 16:32

I mean the moulds he wears at night. It falls off when he is asleep which could choke him. By the way, can you explain about the wire at the back of the teeth more?
Thanks

I have got braces atm and I am going to have the moulds but DS who is 12 years old has braces atm and when his come off Iam going to get him the wire at the back

One of my friends has them in her mouth

It is like a brace but at the back rather than at the front and it stays there 24/7 to hold the teeth in place cos I don't want DS to have to worry about wearing the moulds

Although my brace has worked brilliantly both my orthodontist and I ares sure that my front tooth is going to try to move when it comes off hence why I am going to go for the moulds cos the tooth may try to bend the wire

BTW doesn't your orthdontsit continue to see you for the year following it being taken out?

RTKangaDYSONMummy · 19/03/2008 16:40

if his teeth have moved the mould won't fit him anymore so will prob need to have another one made

IMHO

When his traintracks were taken off DS was told to wear a retainer for (I think) a couple of months, gradually tailing off to once a week - for ever.

Being 16 at the time and fairly bolshy, he apparently said to the orthodontist "Do you really think I'm going to do that ?" & she admitted that most people don't bother with it at all.

DS certainly didn't.

RTKangaDYSONMummy · 19/03/2008 16:44

ours are both train tracks too

That is the reason I am going to opt for the wire for DS so it won't matter if he doesn't wear the moulds

But hopefully I will be more disaplined

DD wears hers one night a week, and has to until she (and her mouth) have completely stopped growing. Dentist says to see her one more time just before age 18.

She used to wear them every night then dropped one night a week until only wearing once a week.

southeastastra · 19/03/2008 17:47

grr my son keeps 'forgetting' to wear his.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 19/03/2008 18:48

Hi sasquatch. My dd had her braces removed shortly before Christmas - she has the see through retainer and is wearing it at night.

Her teeth are still moving a little. The dentist said she needed to keep wearing it for as many hours as possible for as long as possible. We were told she could have a new retainer after 12 months (although I'm not sure how long that would continue for). Dd's is a little loose at the moment becuase when she had her brace off her gums were a bit overgrown and now they've shrunk back the ratiner isn't fitting so well. We're due back in April and I'm going to ask for another to be made. I'm not sure if we'll be able to get it for free but I think the dentist said they were about £30 each.
