Picture on my profile. Do you think it's chickenpox?

I am trying to convince myself that it's just bites or a heat rash.....

Clingy for last couple of days with a slight temperature. Noticed these spots under his arm this evening.

What do you think?

HV called back when I was in the shower (there must be some sort of "person in the shower" radar -it always happens!) She passed it to the GP who then phoned and said to come in.

What's the betting they say "oh it could be chickenpox"

MehgaLegs · 19/03/2008 10:51

My 4 have all recently had chicken pox and the first spots appeared exactly as the ones in your pic, under arms top of chest.

I'll eat my hat if that's not chicken pox.

MehgaLegs · 19/03/2008 10:53

We used Piriton but it didn't help on day two and three. With DS3 I discovered Claritin worked better but is you LO under 2? Can't have Claritin if he is

mawbroon · 19/03/2008 11:16

No, he's 2.5, so would be ok. He doesn't seem to be at all itchy though. Does that come later?

If this is your hat then I will happily help you out

MehgaLegs · 19/03/2008 11:21

mmm nice hat.

When th espots first appeared they didn't itch. Infact the first day was quite straight forward and I thought that this chicken pox thing would be a breeze.

Day 2 and 3 were hell - especially at night. All four had temp and very sore throats. Being hot made them itch. Calamine with glycrine worked on DS1 and DS2 but not on DS3 and DS4 has eczema so I didn't dare put it on him.

With my youngest I found the best way to stop him scratching was to put porridge oats in the bath, keep him cool and distract him with DVDs and books.

Hope you have an easy time. DS1 and DS2 had it quite mildly but DS3 and 4 were covered.

flossish · 19/03/2008 11:24

i think i still have the pic from dd on my profile, very alike and hers was chicken pox.

mawbroon · 19/03/2008 11:30

MehgaLegs - that sounds like a nightmare having all four ill at the same time! I just have PFB so we can sit around breastfeeding and cuddling all day if he wants. Last night was fine though, he slept right through 7-6 for the first time in yonks.

It does look similar to the pic on your profile flossish. Your dd is very cute btw

NorksDrift · 19/03/2008 11:31

Or are they molluscum?

mawbroon · 19/03/2008 11:35

Hmm, not sure about molluscum. Dont think so though..

Chicken pox is more likely to be the cause. My DS had it at the same age as yours, he had about 30 spots and was fine. I came home from work with comics, strawberries raspberries, a toy and a kinder egg and felt slightly silly when I saw how lively and un-ill he was!

toffetoes · 19/03/2008 11:44

When my ds got them at 4 he didn't itch. At first he had a small round spot on his back that looked like a heat spot so I didn't think anything of it just thought it was a heat spot then the next morning when he got up he was covered so I took him GP to make sure, who gave him so piriton and told me to get some cream. He also had them down below which was horrid for him so he could not wear pants or jeans he just stayed in trackies and p.j's most the time but I did buy some oilatum bath stuff which worked a treat I just filled the bath up put that in and let him just sit it for ages (He loved it as he could play for ages) you can get oilatum hair shampoo to as he has a few in his head which were more itchy then the rest.

mawbroon · 19/03/2008 11:45

Yes, un-ill is it exactly!! He just came rushing through to tell me that he saw an aeroplane.

"Was Ryanair, not EasyJet" he told me.

I have just attached a picture to my profile (be there for a short while only) of my youngest DD last week. She was poorly for about 3 weeks and then Friday before last spots started appearing. This picture was taken last Monday - all she did was sleep (with her eyes open). She was covered in spots - although her legs/arms were fairly clear. She had them on her eye lids and one on her eye ball (had to go to hospital and got some antibiotics). She had spots appearing on top of spots but, now they have all dried out and she is back at school.

It definitely looks like chicken pox to me.

mawbroon · 19/03/2008 12:06

Oh the wee soul Bumblelion, that looks like it was a really nasty case. I hope she is on the mend now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/03/2008 12:12

lol at "Was Ryanair, not EasyJet" tis an important distinction you know.

mawbroon · 19/03/2008 12:31

Yes, chickenpox or not, he is an avid plane spotter! We flew last week and when we were on the bus from the plane to the terminal building, he could name every single airline that we drove past!

"That is FlyGlobespan, that is Easyjet, that is British Airways, that is KLM" I have a 2yo anorack

pooka · 19/03/2008 13:42

With ds, it seemed to take ages to bloom into full chickenpox, but when it finally did... went from one spot behind ears to hundreds. I am certain that I could actually see them appearing so quick was the progression.

mawbroon · 19/03/2008 13:51

This is my worry pooka. It will bloom right at Easter weekend when we will have to cancel all the various visiting and stuff that we had planned.

OP posts:
mawbroon · 19/03/2008 15:51

The doc said "hmm, not 100% sure that it's chickenpox, seeing as it's so mild. But we have to treat it as though it were chickenpox"

So I am no further forward really.

There were about four signs on the way into the surgery saying that you should alert reception if your child has high fever and a rash. Makes me think that it's doing the rounds here just now, so I think that makes it even more likely that it is chickenpox that ds has.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/03/2008 16:42

Bless him mawbroon

CrushWithEyeliner · 19/03/2008 16:45

Could it be impetigo - are they like wet little blisters?

mawbroon · 19/03/2008 16:58

No, not like blisters. They are red and raised like bites so far.

OP posts:
Naboo · 19/03/2008 19:19

Mawbroon - SNAP! I just came online to find out what the red 'bite like' spots are, which seemed to have appeared on my 2.5 yr ds.

Your description is exactly the same. I thought it was flea bites at first - cat has been getting daggers all day. I even washed his bed sheets (extreme for me these days!).

He has a few in his hairline - oh oh - just read the handy tip below. I think one on his back looks more blistery this afternoon. But, so far, he is not ill at all. Just very gobby and 'funny'. He has, in retrospect, had a temp for the last few days - as he's felt hot - but i thought it was because he had a jumper on! Sack the parent!

My worry, if this is the pox, is for my 6 month old - who has had a temp for the past few days - although she seems better today. Wonder if she's going to get spotty too?! Wondering, like you, if i can spray the pair of them with breast milk?!!

Have you had any more spots appear, how is he today? Very interested in your case - it's a mirror to mine!

He was meant to go to an easter party tomorrow.

smartiejake · 19/03/2008 19:37

Neither of my 2 dds were ill when they had chicken pox. No fever just a bit itchy and not that many spots either. Sometimes they ae ill before the spots come out. Apparently they are at their most infectious a few days before the spots appear.

mawbroon · 20/03/2008 13:36

Naboo - well, today we have no more spots and the existing ones are no different. They also don't seem to be itchy. However, he does seem to have a bit of a temperature today and is still clingy. How are yours?

smartiejake - I'm hoping that this is as bad as it's going to get for ds.
