I must've wasted about 5 doses

They wont give us anymore, she already said.

First time they took it ok, but then realised how gross it was.

Tried ...

Mixing it with ornage (wont drink it)
Mixing it with cranberry juice (took a bit more but wont finish the whole thing)
Yoghurt (taste was very obvious and wouldn't take another spoonful)

I even tried mixing it with calpol (!) but it was spat out.

I dont want to hold them down and syringe it in

6 day of this 4 times a day, its driving me nutty!

Plus cream 4 times a day too

how old?

Would "I know this is horrible but it will make you bettre and if you swallow it I'll give you a choc button" work?

lentengrrl · 18/03/2008 12:31

ribena?

Or other than that, it's got to be the vice like grip, hold the nose and syringe it in.

Good luck!...

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 12:32

syringe the only way.

i hold child on lap, rock and soothe, then every time they are not hysterical, squirt just a little in... not enough to make them gag. repeat till done. if they are really upset, the quicker the better imo, always making sure they dont gag or get so upset they throw it back up.

Disenchanted · 18/03/2008 12:32

ages 3 and almost 2.

I don't think any amount of chocolate buttons would persuade them.

Its so frustrating, especially the 3 year old

lol at my hardcore hold the nose! and boys' lovely rock and soothe...

am blushing.

theangelshavethephonebox · 18/03/2008 12:36

oh, I feel your pain, I was posting about this only yesterday as we have the same situation with ds. He won't touch it mixed with juice so the only thing we can do is wrap him in towel, hug him tight and syringe in a little at a time.

He is hysterical while we do it but as soon as it's finished he really is absolutely fine (I need half an hour to recover though!)

He's gone to nursery today, god only knows how they are going to get it in him.

We have just started our second lot, by the way as we wasted so much of the first.

theangelshavethephonebox · 18/03/2008 12:37

I am more hardcore than rock and soothe lentengrrl. I just sob afterwards

Disenchanted · 18/03/2008 12:38

Oh the angels,

its crap isnt it??

DH is back at work tomorrow so ill have to do it alone to both of them 4 times a day, arghhh!

It's awful. dd2 had prophylactic aniseed disgusting antibiotics for a YEAR. What was even worse, was after a while she just accepted it...

barnstaple · 18/03/2008 12:45

I'll be lambasted over this but when this happened with dd I got so hopeless that I used the Mary Poppins method - spoonful of sugar.

(Hides in a dark corner)

vacaloca · 18/03/2008 12:46

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Finally got the hang of it, holding DD and syringing very little at a time so she didn't have enough in her mouth to spit it out. The mistake I was making it initially was putting a whole load in and then she'd gag and throw up. By this time we'd wasted most of the doses though so I went back to the doctor who gave me a different one to try, something banana flavour and DD actually liked it so no more struggles after that. Go back and see if they can change it to a different one.

Sugarmagnolia · 18/03/2008 12:57

hang on barnstaple - I've got an even better one.

Chocolate ice cream!

Obviously not a whole bowlful every time - maybe about a tablespoonful mixed with each dose. Not ideal but it works and will get them better.

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 12:59

lol lenten, you hard nut. arf

the thing is, once theyve dug their heels in like that, theres no way theyre going to agree, and you have to get it in them one way or another, so syringe it is!

and if that spoonful of sugar got it in, then thats fine too y'know barnstaple

rey · 18/03/2008 13:12

Years ago I used cola!!!!!!! Told doctor afterwards and she said use whatever it takes so didn't feel so bad afterwards. Syringe just chocked or spat it out nearly being sick and after first attempt didn't trust me. Good luckx

rebelmum1 · 18/03/2008 13:16

the first thing i would do is check it's absolutely necessary and not a just in case, not really sure what's going on prescription.
If it is a bacterial infection - use a syringe u only have to force once or twice then they take it. Make sure u give a treat afterwards.

Flier · 18/03/2008 13:34

I'm going through this just now with dd (1y10m). I try to blow gently on her face so she has to take a breath, and I also read a tip on here, to gently stroke their throat, which I think you can only really do if there are 2 of you.
The remaining 7.5ml of her medicine is currently in her juice cup, hopefully she'll drink it

GentleOtter · 18/03/2008 13:36

Mix it with spoonful of jam.

Disenchanted · 18/03/2008 17:14

I just wrapped him up in a blanket, held him still and did it in about 4 small squirts, he was fine!

I think I was making the 'squirt the whole lot in' mistake too!

you could try mixing the antibiotics with undiluted orange squash rather than with juice. The intense sweetness can often drown out the bitter or sour of the medicine. three parts to one squash to medicine. brush teeth afterwards! sometimes works

VanillaPumpkin · 18/03/2008 17:51

Ice cream. I had to give dd hideous anti-b and they were the only option. They were truly revolting. Ice cream was the only way I had a hope of getting them down her.
