Chicken pox .. is this normal

My 7 year old was unwell last week with sore throat , fever and a rash all over her back and chest. GP prescribed antibiotics. Over the weekend the rash went and she bounced back! Monday morning chicken pox began to appear. Today her back is absolutely covered but around each spot/blister is big red marks, her whole back is hot to touch. She has lots on her tummy and face too but her back is particularly bad. All the images online don’t seem to look like this and I wondered if it is worth a call to GP - if I can get through/get an appointment! She still has a fever, body aches, tired, not eating much as she has a few spots in her mouth, but she is drinking enough still. Her younger brother had chicken pox over Xmas (28 spots in total - very mild) thanks

@Lpid2014 Hi op , chicken pox can look very different on each child my DD hot them and had about 10 in total her friend got them and I've never seen so many ones child in my life she was absolutely covered in them and hers looked like your DD, however if you are worried you could get her seen by the GP

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/01/2024 21:04

My dc both looked like that @Lpid2014. Horrible isn't it? DD was only 9 months old, and her poxes all joined up.

We found PoxClin very soothing. Because it's a mousse you can dab it on without touching their sore skin.

Lpid2014 · 10/01/2024 21:06

Thank you for that 😀 I read that if they are red around them then they could be infected but they are literally all red / inflamed! No oozing though.
we have been using the mousse the last 2 days - it does help soothe it

Thank you that’s really helpful 😀

Unfortunately, yes I believe it is normal as that is what my DD looked like. I couldn't believe what she looked like. She looked like she'd been sunburned from head to toe! Obviously if you're concerned I would ring 111.

Hiyawotcha · 10/01/2024 21:16

Our gp has an econsult service where you go online and state the issue and can upload photos if you want. I personally would do this if it is possible at your surgery. just for reassurance really. It does look like a horrible case of it - my daughter caught it from my son and she was riddled with it while he got off relatively lightly and then when my youngest got it years later it was barely a thing. Even dd didn’t look quite as sore as that. I’m sure it’s fine but if you are worried it cannot hurt to seek a medical opinion.

lissie123 · 10/01/2024 21:18

I would get your dd seen by a GP just to check her over tomorrow . Or ring 111 if you are concerned about her tonight

LancashireSquirrel · 10/01/2024 21:23

Don't forget to give her some piriton. And oat baths.

Shouldbedoing · 10/01/2024 21:27

And do NOT give them ibuprofen. It can cause complications.

vipersnest1 · 10/01/2024 21:34

Please don't take her to the surgery without warning them she has chicken pox, OP.
Give them a call by all means (I can see why you're concerned as she truly is plastered in it, poor thing), but you might be best off giving them a ring, explaining and seeing if there is any way you can send the picture you've shown us to them. They might say to bring her in, or deal with it at a distance so to speak. I hope she feels much better soon - chicken pox can be miserable (I had it as an adult and was covered literally head to toe!)

CuntRYMusicStar · 10/01/2024 21:39

My ds had awful chicken pox. Oat baths were soothing. I absolutely pasted him in calamine lotion. Also put socks on his hands to stop him catching with his nails when he was scratching!

I would call the GP to be safe, they might have you send a pic. We ended up with antibiotics as a couple of areas got infected.

LancashireSquirrel · 10/01/2024 21:49

Another thing that helped was a calamine aqueous cream rather than lotion. It was much less drying and more soothing. I hope she feels better soon, OP. It really is horrible.

Lpid2014 · 11/01/2024 08:17

Thanks everyone! We have been doing all of the above. It’s even worse today with the redness spreading and still has a fever! In the queue for a GP call back! Better to be on the safe side! Thanks again

@Lpid2014 Hi op , sorry to hear it's worse today , hope you hear back from the GP soon

Retsina24 · 11/01/2024 14:06

Hope you've managed to speak to the GP. Definitely worth getting checked out as chickenpox can cause complications. Hope your DD feels better soon

LancashireSquirrel · 11/01/2024 21:34

What did the GP say, OP? Hope your DD is okay.

fourelementary · 11/01/2024 22:56

@Lpid2014 How is dd?

Lpid2014 · 12/01/2024 06:42

Thanks all, GP was very concerned and arranged for her to be admitted to hospital. She has some antibiotics and hopefully feeling better soon

Glad to hear your DD is receiving the care she needs.

LancashireSquirrel · 12/01/2024 12:46

Oh bless her. You were so right to trust your instincts and phone them back!
