Unordinary Constipation

Nogodsnomasters · 09/01/2024 11:26

Background: I've had IBS for 15yrs, with varying changing symptoms over the years.

This year I've become constipated but it took months to work out that that was what it is as I don't have the obvious traditional constipation symptoms of not going to the loo or hard stools. It took myself and my GP a while to come to the conclusion that it is constipation. I have a bowel movement every day, sometimes several times per day, and the more constipated I become the more frequently I go to the bathroom?! The movements are not hard themselves they're actually soft/fluffy (not sausage shaped at all but rather in pieces) but they are difficult to pass, I have to squeeze and push to get them moving and they are incomplete movements, small amounts each time but I have the urge to go several times per day with each stool getting smaller as the day goes on.

My GP prescribed fybogel which I've been using on/off for about 6 months now. It works to a varying degree, as in after a few days usage I will have more complete and full bowel movements and therefore less trips to the toilet per day and this will remain the case for a week or two and then the symptoms come back and I take the fybogel again for a few days and round and round we go.

I have tried upping my fibre intake through diet, fruit, veg, shredded wheat, chia seeds and flaxseeds in yogurts and on the cereal etc, I drink plenty of water. I don't do a great deal of high intensity exercise but I walk a lot and do yoga.

Has anyone else had this kind of constipation that I'm describing? If so what do they do about it? I'm getting really tired of it. Other symptoms of it when it's flaring up are nausea, some mild tummy pain, excess wind but those have always been the case with my IBS anyway.

I’m really glad the dr wants to examine you. I get the trepidation though, but honestly this sort of thing is their bread and butter - remember that some nurses and drs choose to specialise in continence issues, an examination tells them a lot that you never could and they won’t think about the actual event the minute you leave their office. They’re too busy tying your symptoms and problems together to find you an answer that will help.

good luck x

Ask for an endoscopy etc. Quite a few things it can be.

My daughter had overflow from constipation. It wasn't watery. Soft and gritty. Difficult to wash off

Okay "gritty" is an excellent description of what I'm dealing with. And the grittiness in my case is pieces of undigested food, sorry to be gross but I can actually see it and discern from colours what it is.

are you managing to go to work?
how is this impacting you day to day?
do you have children?

plumberdrain · 12/01/2024 16:55

are you losing weight?

Nogodsnomasters · 12/01/2024 16:56

Ok I had the examination, she said my external pile was fine and not overly prolapsed, no internal piles, no poo in the rectum and no bulges where they shouldn't be, so basically normal and im no further forward. She's prescribed laxido to switch to rather than the fybogel and to try for a full fortnight.

@Jandob I had an attempted endoscopy in November, despite being sedated they could not get the camera down my throat as I fought against them while drowsy, so in December I was given a barium swallow test instead which showed no hernia, no tumours, no restrictions, no ulceration but moderate/severe reflux with no structural reason. 🙈

are you losing weight?

No. During a flare up I struggle to eat due to the nausea so I do drop a few pounds and then when it settles again I manage to return to normal calories intake and put the weight back on again so it does cause me to go up and down but not continually losing.

Sorry didn't realize you asked questions on two posts. I left my job last year under pretense of focusing on the children to other people but the main reason was that I was not coping with work due to all these symptoms and the anxiety it brings me.
I have two children, one biological one fostered.

Are you on reflux meds? They really muck with my pooing!

I am. Omeprazole first which didn't do much and then they switched me to pantoprozole which works a bit better but not a cure.

Nope not overweight, I'm 5ft 3 and weigh 9st 7, dress size 10-12.

Yes thankfully I have a really supportive husband who works full time.
I think it's just the unpredictableness of it that really affected my ability to work, one day I can be completely fine and it's fantastic and then the next day I'm nauseous, acid refluxing and having the urge to use the bathroom up to 6 times a day and being stuck there for ages. It even affects my sleep sometimes and causes anxiety.

A bowel stimulant was most helpful to my dd for the overflow. Obviously if you are going a lot already this might not be desirable.

Kids with the impaction often need a full clear out with laxatives. The poo nurses have a great video I'll look it up

WhatAFoolishFool · 13/01/2024 13:35

Yes. Mine was caused by gluten intolerance.

WhatAFoolishFool · 13/01/2024 13:37

Just seen you also have reflux. Have you had your calcium levels checked? Elevated levels cause constipation and high stomach acid amongst other things

spearthatbroc · 13/01/2024 16:33

You no longer work because of this? Is there any hone working option you can pursue?

I can’t recommend more highly movement. Yoga, loads of walking, running if you’re up to it. What is your exercise / movement like?

Thanks for your comment but I attempted gluten free last year not long after this all began as my friend also suggested that, I went GF for 5 weeks, it didn't make a difference.

I don't know if they checked calcium or not, I had a blood test last year for things like thyroid, iron, B12, vitamin D, liver and kidney function etc. There was no mention of calcium.

It wasn't just the symptoms it was the affect they were having on my mental heath, I am diagnosed with health anxiety and PTSD which is also health emergency related and so the symptoms had me convinced I had something sinister going on and I was having daily panic attacks, I've managed to get those under control and went back to counselling - I wasn't coping at work due to the combination of both. I don't NEED to work right now so I'm not looking for WFH options. I'll return to work when the time is right for me.

I don't do any high intensity exercise if I'm honest but I occasionally do yoga (a few times per month), walking would be my main exercise with the dogs/kids, I usually do a short walk per day plus walking the kids to school and then once per week I do a really long walk in the woods. I know I'm meant to be doing more.

spearthatbroc · 13/01/2024 18:37

yoga…. 3x a week minimum. Lots of twists and stretches. And ramp up the waking, fast. It should help

WhatAFoolishFool · 14/01/2024 09:45

Then if I was you I’d request a bone profile with PTH and vitamin D. Do you have any other non specific symptoms? Like fatigue, any aches or pains, anxiety?

Not sure I can just ring up my GP and demand a bone profile - honestly don't even know what that is? Lol.
Yes I have fatigue, aches/pains and anxiety. I've had anxiety for about 12yrs.

Colonoscopy to find out any underlying conditions.
