Epilepsy question

How long do your DC usually sleep after a tonic clonic seizure? DS normally sleeps for about 2 hours but after this morning’s seizure it’s coming up for 5 hours and he’s still asleep. He is muttering ‘go away please’ when I go in there so is conscious, but I’ve never known him to sleep for so long. He was much groggier than usual after the seizure - he’s normally wobbly and slurry but this time needed support to walk the few steps to his bed. Should I be worried?

How long was the seizure?

The longer the seizure the longer the sleep in my experience. But thats not an exact science as everyone is different.

From what you have described this is a change for him, I'd call the nurses/clinic (whatever your support set up is) and explain things have changed.

His medication might need changing - what age is he?

He’s 21 and has autism as well as epilepsy. We’re in the process of changing his meds ( weaning off one and onto another ) so I think this could have been the trigger. I’ve emailed his epilepsy nurse. He eventually got up after 5 hrs sleep.

I think that's the best action to take. His nurse will know what's normal.

Changing medication is tricky. Would it be possible he also had a seizure during the night? That could cause him to be more tired - two seizures close together.

How are you doing? Its such a cause for worry epilepsy isn't it. Lease I have a constant underlying stress about my son.

my child has been known to sleep the
clock round if he is having a particularly rough day. I think 30 hrs was the record at home after usual meds and 3 days in hospital following numerous rescue meds.

Added complication in that when he woke up and came downstairs he was limping. Just back from hospital and he’s broken the tip of his ankle bone. He must have rolled his ankle when he got out of bed after sleeping - we were with him during the seizure and he definitely didn’t do it then. One more thing….
