Lunch box ideas for 6 year old for school?

Lovelyjubbbly · 07/01/2024 12:03

son starts back school tomorrow he usually has a pack lunch 2/3 times a week.

he can be fussy sometimes in the house but he will eat there majority at school and have me on pritty much in the house.

I don’t like sending him in to school with things he tells me he doesn’t like incase he goes hungry so I need some ideas that are more healthy for him.
he doesn’t like cheese , corn beef , crackers tomato’s etc etc

at the moment usual things in the lunch box is usually

jam chicken ham or tuna sandwich
yogurt
grapes / bananas ( only fruit he says he likes)
usually a bag of cookies/animal biscuits
crisps or cucumber fingers
plus a fruit shoot

l think it’s not that healthy at all I want to start been more healthy with him and make sure he’s trying different things.

he usually gets a small snack for break time so I want to make sure his lunch box is bare minimum with sugar as we’re making sure he has healthy teeth as his new ones are starting to come through his big teeth! 😊

The lunch ideas you listed sound fine to me.

The first thing I'd swap would be just water to drink. easy way to cut sugar (and cost)

I'd aim to limit the fruit shoot and jam sandwich to occasional. Otherwise sounds OK. Some ideas (but he might not like them!):

  • Avocado either on it's own or in a sandwich. My fussy child eats this (amazingly!) but my other one doesn't
  • Making some sort of fritter/savoury muffin with egg, cheese and some veg
  • Trying wraps as a variation of a sandwich

Might be worth trying dried fruit? My son doesn't eat a wide range of fruits but will eat dried mango/raisins. Also cold pasta salad and chicken is one he likes

ditch the fruit shoot if you want to avoid sugar.

switch up sandwiches for wraps, pittas even pasta.

use a muffin tray to make egg bites using egg, spinach, peppers, cheese etc.

bake your own treats with low sugar content, there’s some great recipes out there online.

dried fruit is a good shout as the texture isn’t as squishy.

Have you tried him with pepper, carrot, cucumber sticks some hummus or tzatziki?

Have you tried berries, such as blueberries? I find them quite bland tasting, but I've read that they're a superfood.

Ditch the fruit shoot and get him a reusable water bottle. Ditch the bag of cookies and give him an oat bar or dried fruit. Ditch the crisps and give him veggie sticks. He might complain for the first few days but if he's hungry he'll eat it! I have a fussy eater of the same age and deliberately never put junk food in his lunch box because he'd get too used to it 😂 The sandwich options seem fine to me! Mine will only tolerate jam or cheese sandwiches so I fill the rest of the box with fruit and veg to compensate.

Mine takes breadsticks with some dairylea or philadelphia and ham, a bit of a DIY lunchable if you like! Will also eat houmous with the breadsticks as well sometimes.

If he'll eat cheese, you can get little individual cheese portions.

Can you do some home baking? Banana muffin, flapjacks etc.?

Mine also likes rice cakes - the organix flavoured ones or yoghurt/chocolate coated ones
