Is it normal to urinate after passing out?

I woke in the middle of the night, felt a bit odd, especially my head, not a headache but a funny sensation. I woke up in a pool of urine half an hour later on the floor away from my bed but I've no recollection of getting there. I'm having tests at the moment but have not experienced anything like this before.

I'm wondering how normal it is to urinate after passing out?

Didn’t you do a thread about this the other day?

withthischoice · 06/01/2024 16:28

none of what you describe is “normal”

how long ago? and what tests?

penjil · 06/01/2024 16:50

Yes, when you pass out, it's quite common to lose control of your bladder when you lose consciousness.

Mammma91 · 06/01/2024 16:52

Have you contacted the gp since this has happened op? As it’s the first time it’s happened, it seems whatever is wrong, might well be worsening? I don’t want to scare you but I’d call 111 or the GP, just even so there is record of it. Hope you’re ok! But yes it is normal to loose control of your bowels and bladder when unconscious.

Gymmum82 · 06/01/2024 16:56

It can happen when you pass out. But when you have a seizure it’s more common. Could be that’s what happened. A friend thought she was passing out when she was actually having seizures. She had a brain tumour. I’d get checked out asap

badlydrawntoy · 06/01/2024 16:57

Not normal but it does happen. What's more worrying tbh is that you were out for 30 mins.
It's definitely worth getting checked out. Did you injure yourself?

Yes, I did but realised maybe I should put it in general health as people might know more. Sorry if I've made a mistake doing this as I didn't realise there was a general health section.

I'm having MRI and BP monitor next week. Blood pressure and ECG normal so far. I was supposed to be doing an activity today but cancelled. I'm usually very healthy so don't want to overreact but I got a fright. I didn't injure myself otherwise.

I went unconscious when I had sepsis - collapsed in the kitchen, came round to see paramedics leaning over me, and I had weed myself. Was taken to hospital in wet pants 😖

This happened my teenaged son. He woke up at 3am feeling strange and went to the bathroom to get some water, shouted for us and then crumpled onto the ground. He was checked out for possible seizure but it was decided he had fainted/syncope and that perhaps he was incubating a virus. I didn't know fainting could make you lose bladder control, his leg was also twitching when he was passed out- it was scary for him and us.

Angrymum22 · 06/01/2024 17:55

Sometimes with a faint your brain is starved of oxygen long enough to trigger a non epileptic seizure and you can urinate as a result. As a dentist I have seen a lot of fainting and on a few occasions accompanied with seizure and urinating. If you got up suddenly and passed out but didn’t fall to a position where your head was lower than your body you may have not recovered quickly.
Hopefully it was a one off syncope with accompanying non-epileptic seizure but good to hear your GP has organised further tests to rule out other less common causes.
My DS and I are currently suffering from mild flu virus. I have had to take care getting out of bed because I constantly feel dizzy. DS has just slept for 48hrs. Just hoping that DH doesn’t come down with it since he’s already wobbly after a stroke a couple of years ago.

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 06/01/2024 18:05

I have fainted over the course of my life and wet myself a few times, never lost consciousness for that long though.

lljkk · 06/01/2024 18:09

Did anyone see the episode of (US series) Ghosts where this happens?
Body functions go haywire at extreme moments, yes.

Onthefloor4 · 06/01/2024 18:11

Thanks for all the advice. I wasn't going to get it investigated further for fear of overreacting but probably good I am.

I have fainted many many times md lost bladder control only once. I do think half an hour is a long time to be ‘out’ though.

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 06/01/2024 19:09

I used to faint a lot. Very often wet myself

Goatymum · 06/01/2024 21:42

I’ve fainted quite a few times in my life and have lost bladder control a couple of times - year and years ago as a teen and young adult. I’m in my 50s now.
There’s loads of reasons for fainting, you usually feel faint first. Recently I lost consciousness from nowhere after an ‘aura’n and am seeing a neurologist in a couple of months (already had scan and nothing obvious). I didn’t wee myself then though.

Sunflwer · 06/01/2024 21:46

I've fainted twice due to hormonal influences. Didn't wet myself either time.

FlowersandTea1 · 08/01/2024 09:09

Important to get yourself checked out, regardless.

Onthefloor4 · 17/01/2024 16:51

So I had head MRI and heart checks and all clear so far, so I'm happy with that obviously, but they reckon I had a seizure, cause unknown. They want to do an EEG but I'm not sure I want to have any more tests now.

Would it be silly of me not to?

OP posts:
Gymmum82 · 17/01/2024 16:55

Yes it would be silly. You could have epilepsy. You need to be checked out fully

Sunflwer · 17/01/2024 19:42

Yes, you should get it thoroughly checked out.

They wouldn't suggest an ECG unless they thought it was important. They don't go around wasting resources. I would really get it done.

Munchyseeds2 · 17/01/2024 20:46

It would be silly not to have all the tests they are suggesting, they aren't doing them for fun

Onthefloor4 · 23/01/2024 09:54

I'm going to have the EEG, just waiting on an appointment. Since this happened though, I'm very nervous of it happening again, even though all tests were clear.
