How can I make myself feel healthier ??

At the moment, I constantly seem to feel just on the edge of being ill, always slightly queasy or off colour, or got sniffles, which never turn into something.

I feel knackered and drained 99.9% of the time, and seem to be putting weight on when I am trying to lose it , although I do eat more crap of late.

I just want to feel normal again, whatever that is.

Limit the bread.
Try rye bread and crackers too (Dr Karg ones are lovely)
At the very least make your bread wholemeal.
Cereals like Rice Krispies are worse than useless. You need porridge.
Sorry to preach but it always amazes me how people are quick to think their GP can fix something that more often than not is within their own power.

When I had IBS the one thing that turned it around for me was drinking more water. It really helped with digestion although I did start eating more fruit too. Peppermint oil capsules before eating as well.

I cut out tea completely as it made me feel ill and I don't tolerate caffeine very well at the best of times so never drink coffee. Once I was back on an even keel I was able to drink it again but I only ever have about 4 or 5 cups of tea a week max.

Mind you that was a few years ago and I have let it all slide again recently so I end up feeling a bit like you sometimes.

I need to take a dose of my own medicine!

Drink more water.,
In oyur list you haven't mentioned any water, and only one fruit juice.

I stated drinking more water about 6 months ago and the effect is amazing.
My skin has cleared up, I have less flaky patches and I feel better.

Fill a jug every day and make sure you drink it.

And incease wholmeal carbs, and obviusly F&V.

Porridge is like a miracle food. It fills oyu up and is nice!!!

Eat bananas - they help improve your mood

Eat porridge or oats for breakfast rather than processed cereal.

Wholemeal bread and pasta.

UnderRated · 17/03/2008 19:43

And you can make porridge more interesting by adding stuff - raisins, blueberries, actually any berries, grated apple, cinnamon etc

Tnog · 17/03/2008 19:51

I'd echo what the others have suggested.

A few weeks of drinking lots of water, eating well and some brisk walks in the fresh air will have you looking and feeling much better, with lots more energy.

It will give you the impetus to continue.

I honestly have tried to eat porridge several hundred times, but I just can't stand it.

I do know that most of how I feel is down to my diet moondog, but thyroid problems to run in my family and I should at least get it checked out as I do have alot of the symptoms, and if even some of the lethargy is down to that, then hopefully treatment would then make me at least lively enough to care about what I put in my mouth. As it is at the moment, I shovel in whatever is quickest and least effort.

I do snack, mostly because of boredom tbh. I supose I should try snack on fruit and nothing else.

I will get some crackers tommorow, and go back to only having wholemeal bread in the house.

Is 2 slices of wholemeal and marmalade ok for breakfast ?? I know it won't fill me up like porridge, but I truly cannot stand the stuff.

Will also try again with the water. Will do some ice cubes as that makes me more likely to drink it.

Tastes can be changed. Last year I kept getting sore throats/colds etc and then some sore throat thing I couldn't throw off, was tested for glandular fever in the end. I gave up junk food and caffeine and made sure I ate 3 regular meals a day and I was just thinking so far this year I haven't had a single bug or cold even when the children have. But if you'd have asked me 12 months ago if I could prefer fruit to pizza or that I could give up chocolate entirely (I seem to have to have none or loads - like an alcoholic with alcohol) I would have laughed at you.

Start gradually. Every day have some eggs, bacon and brown rice or oat cakes for breakfast for a start.

(By the way most diets recommended for people with depression suggest giving up white bread and sugar)

CrackerOfNuts · 17/03/2008 20:07

I could quite easily eat bacon and scrambled eggs every morning, however I couldn't do that until I had taken the kids to school, and if I don't eat breakfast as soon as I get up, I feel very sick.

I could have a glass of milk to fill me up enough to hang on though I think. Would that be ok ?

I don't know if you could be bothered, but making your own bread is great! There's nothing particularly wrong with pizza per se... YOu can add extra tomato sauce, extra roasted peppers, mushrooms, sweetcorn, whatever you like. You can also add tuna and anything else you can think of.

Soup is a really good way of cramming in veg. It's easy, cheap and hard to go wrong. YOu can also throw in protein - whatever's around, from bits of bacon, pulses, lentils, a bit of fish. You can buy just-add-water cous-cous, and these things work well with lots of added cucumber, tomatoes, spring onions and other salady things. Avocado pears are brilliant! Seeds and nuts are good too.

Judy1234 · 17/03/2008 20:48

I don't know the age of your children but I can put on poached eggs and some bacon under the grill and it takes about 5 - 8 minutes to cook and not much longer to eat whilst they're dressing . Couldn't you get up 10 minutes earlier then each day.

moondog · 17/03/2008 22:31

Wholemeal toast is ok.
How can you not like porridge???
It is fantastic stuff.

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 10:23

It tastes like glue LOL.

Having a bad day today, was up half the night with stomach problems again. Can't get in to see my gp today either.

Have only had a slice of toast and half a cup of tea so far, as I am scared to eat anything.

I think it takes time to train yourself to like proper food tbh.

At risk of sounding like smug fart,I would never eat what you eat because it would make me feel so awful.More to the point,I wouldn't even want to eat it.

Inferior fuel.
Surely you are worth more?

CrackerOfNuts · 18/03/2008 16:45

I think you are right moondog, and I think my body may currently be giving me a wake up call.

Have only managed toast today as still feel too rough to have anything else, but might try a jacket spud later.

I feel really stupid and down about what I have done to myself tbh. Have spent years being able to eat what I liked wether it be crap or not, and now I can't seem to eat a thing without ending up doubled up in pain later on.

Tis my own fault though.
