Is my house a bug hotel? Losing the plot

DS has been bitten again!! What is going on. I've searched high and low and have ruled out fleas and bed bugs. The only thing I can think of is mosquitoes, I have seen some dead ones after spraying the house with bug killer (thanks paranoia) but he's been bitten again today. But it's January in the UK! I was shocked to find mozzies last month in the house, why is this happening? I've now killed wood lice, lady birds and spiders in the house which is a shame, but I'm about ready to burn the place down. Pic attached of bites in case anyone has any insight and if it's likely to be mozzies.

How have you rules out fleas?
They look like flea bites to me.

CorneliusMyArm · 04/01/2024 23:47

@EverDecreasingStandards I've checked the dog about a million times (he's not my friend currently), he's treated anyway. I've also sprayed the house with flea spray just in case. There's no flea dirt on the dog and I've been on my hands and knees with a torch all around the house. When we had them before I found evidence of them, this time there's absolutely nothing. I wish I could find something, other than the mosquitoes I've seen nothing. Even if it was fleas, at least I know how to eradicate them

I once got bitten to death by fleas when no pets had been living in the house for a couple of months. They were in the carpet, laying eggs, hatching, biting me then breeding.

CorneliusMyArm · 05/01/2024 20:44

what a nightmare! They're a pain to get rid of. These just don't look like the bites he had when we did have a flea problem. I've also treated as such just in case and he's still being bitten. I think I'm a pro at flea killing at these stage which is why I think this is something else. I'll check Ddog over just in case again as well

I'm sorry OP but as a walking buffet for fleas they are looking very much like flea bites.

They can live up to six months without nibbling a live source. They hide in cracks such as skirting boards and internal door joints. They like living at the sides of stair treads. They love central heating.

It is doubtful they are on the dog, but be careful of overdosing your dog as it is a poison. Use indorex spray exactly as it says. Repeat as necessary.

SparrowFeet · 05/01/2024 21:31

As PP said they do look like flea bites. If the dog is flea treated they're probably jumping on the dog and dying anyway so that could be why you're not seeing anything on the dog.
Vacuum, Indorex, then vacuum every day to get the fuckers hatching out quicker. Or three times a day if you're feeling fancy.

CorneliusMyArm · 06/01/2024 00:08

That is definitely not what I wanted to hear. I've done this rodeo before though so I can do it again. Time to hoover every square inch of the house and spend a fortune on treatments. Will make sure the dog goes everywhere to hoover them up too. It's just odd that we've been clear for months and months and now they reappear! I really thought it was mozzies as I've seen a fair few in the house. Thanks all

Just an update, still nothing on DDog but have put him back on nexgard as of this morning. House has been sprayed for the 3rd time this fortnight and hoovered everywhere as per instructions again. Killed another mosquito last night but treating it as fleas as hopefully that'll kill anything else as well. Is the advantage not an effective flea treatment anymore? I've not known it to fail previously but this past year seems like everyone is having a bigger problem!

OP posts:
SparrowFeet · 06/01/2024 20:09

We had the same this year and had to go on the drontal from the vets. Horrible things
It is odd about your mosquitos. Do you have standing water about?

CorneliusMyArm · 07/01/2024 11:02

Vile aren't they. I
We live right near a lake that's currently flooded the area to about 4ft deep (not our street luckily!) then there's a river right next to that. The fields look like lakes as well. So I suppose there's quite a lot of standing water, everywhere is sodden around here as soon as it rains thanks to clay and too much building!

OP posts:
sagalooshoe · 07/01/2024 11:07

If you're living amongst flooded land there are bound to be mozzies.

Perhaps he's getting bitten whilst out of the house, rather than in it?

I'd try mozzie repellent on his legs and see if it stops

Spinet · 07/01/2024 11:07

I once had this with my daughter. Stopped when I changed her mattress. I think it was fleas despite having treated the cat/sprayed indorex / vacced everything because I don't think bed bugs would go away with the mattress!

blacksax · 07/01/2024 11:17

It's the middle of winter so mosquito bites are extremely unlikely. Almost all of the adults will have died in the autumn and their larvae won't have hatched yet, it is too cold.

I suspect fleas.

CorneliusMyArm · 07/01/2024 11:36

@sagalooshoe that's what I'm thinking. He's not been bitten in his room anymore since I've put the zapper and plug in repellant in. I'll start religiously applying jungle fever also.

@Spinet oh how strange! Yeah I'd say not bedbugs, they get in the bedframe and everything and transfer around the house into the sofa and all sorts. But then you'd think fleas wouldn't stay in one area either. That's a really odd one. I wonder if it was some type of mite. Found out that paper mites are a thing yesterday so that's a whole new horror to be paranoid about.

@blacksax usually I would agree with you but I've had 6 mosquitoes in the house in the last fortnight so they clearly haven't died and it's been very mild and wet here, I'm treating it as fleas anyway because then everything else should also die. Permethrin kills everything apparently.

The whole house has been sprayed three times now so I don't think anything will survive long, especially as there can't be many of whatever it is. I'll spray again after a week. Off to Hoover again, wish me luck.

Another vote for fleas sorry. My cat isn't itching, no dirt on him yet my daughter keeps getting bitten. I thought it was when she was out the house until DF found a flea on his ankle. Indorex wasn't working. We put down diatomaceous earth, hoovered, washed and tumble dried all textiles and steam cleaned which got rid of them but on Xmas eve behold another bite. Tried acclaim spray on amazon which seems to have worked but they are a nightmare. Cat gets frontline plus applied religiously. Will be looking to get a vet issued treatment if they come back again. They make me feel so dirty 😫

CorneliusMyArm · 07/01/2024 21:34

@EmmaM84 what a nightmare. Touch wood we've not had anymore bites so hopefully what I've done has killed the rogue ones, the dog is on nexgard again now as well, not sure if that's available for cats but it is brilliant, prescription only so not cheap but worth it. Do you think you brought them in from somewhere if there's none on the cat?

Rosesarecolourful · 08/01/2024 05:23

Those are mozzie bites. Only needs a bit of mild humid weather for the eggs to hatch and off they go! Depending on where in the uk you are, most of it doesn't get to sub zero Temps in winter being an oceanic climate

CorneliusMyArm · 08/01/2024 10:04

@Rosesarecolourful just seems too much of a coincidence that I've seen so many in and around our house. Hopefully we'll have a good frost here soon and they'll die. I'll never know for sure what it was as I've gone overboard with everything and that's what's going to annoy me the most!

I've discovered my conservatory guttering has stagnant water and mosquitos have been breading in it for months. My windows are old too so they are getting in through the crack
