Sickness in morning...not morning sickness!

Just wondering if anyone has any idea what's causing this...

For context, I've never eaten breakfast in years and years. I always eat between 12-8pm even before I knew this was intermittent fasting. So nothing has changed in terms of my diet, etc. I usually do need at least two coffees though first thing on a morning!

However, the past couple of weeks I've been getting horrible waves of nausea after my first morning coffee. I'm not actually being sick but it's so bad that I need to sit down for a while with head between knees and just try and breathe through it. It's a definite 'ill' sickly feeling rather than the sick feeling you get when hungry.

I know the first thing people would ask is am I pregnant but I've had two normal periods (and a negative test!) since the last time I had sex.

I have a fairly healthy diet, drink lots of water and take a fair few supplements, etc. but again, nothing has changed. It's ok when I'm WFH as I'm alone but don't really want to be hiding in the office toilets until it passes!

What happens if you don't drink coffee?

Picklemeyellow · 04/01/2024 09:20

How old are you op?

I ask because, although I’ve suffered with digestive issues (IBS) since I was 25 it wasn’t until I got into my 40’s that I started to suffer from upper gut issues, nausea being one of the biggest issues. I think perimenopause is causing my nausea.

It is at its worst in the AM and like you, I’ve not had breakfast for many, many years and don’t eat until at least mid morning but nothing really eases the nausea although I am finding it’s much worse mid cycle.

I have to steer clear of any caffeine, coffee makes my issues so much worse.

Worth a pop to the GP if it continues as it could also be an acid reflux issue.

@whyhere I've not tried... the thought is hard to bear 🤣

@Picklemeyellow I'm 38. I do have endometriosis which means I struggle with bowel issues at certain times in my cycle but this feels very different. Although I have started back on the pill recently and now wondering if it could be that somehow!

I think, before getting medical help, you need to try drinking something else (caffeine-free tea?) to see what, if any, difference that makes. It's quite usual for people to go off coffee/caffeine after a period of illness, so it clearly has an interaction with the gut.

I had to try a myriad of contraceptive pills as so many had this side effect . Makes sense really as it mimics pregnancy. See if this is a known side effect and if so , ask GP advice.

Picklemeyellow · 04/01/2024 13:01

InAMess2023 I’ve literally found out, just before Christmas that I have endometriosis. It now makes sense of all
the years I’ve suffered from gut issues.

Mandarina4 · 04/01/2024 13:37

I'm 44 and started to have the same issue as you. It gets worse before my period so I assume it is related to hormones. I also started having awful IBS symptoms and I'm taking probiotics. I don't have more stress than usual and I haven't changed anything in my diet so I can only blame age.

NoCloudsAllowed · 04/01/2024 13:40

When do you take your supplements, OP? If I take vitamins on anything like an empty stomach, I throw up. It's definitely getting worse now I'm into my 40s!

WilbursWinnie · 04/01/2024 13:42

I have recently become unable to drink "proper" coffee without feeling nauseous. It affects me at any time of day if I drink the proper ground coffee rather than instant.

I've just stopped drinking proper coffee and stick to tea or instant.

I'm not sure what's causing it.

JoyeuxNarwhal · 04/01/2024 14:39

I'm older than you @InAMess2023 and post menopausal but I think you're onto something with your thoughts about the pill. When I was taking utrogestan (100mg progesterone) as part of my HRT each night, every morning I woke up feeling hungover for want of a better description. Knackered and nauseous.

3 months ago I stopped that and had a Mirena coil fitted and my morning hangovers are gone.

InAMess2023 · 04/01/2024 14:53

@JoyeuxNarwhal there's me saying nothing has changed and totally forgetting about starting the pill! Just spoke to my mum and she said she also felt nauseous when taking progesterone as part of cancer treatment... I did have a coil until recently but had it removed as I found out I'm probably infertile but regretting this decision now! I needed a general anaesthetic to have it put in though so not sure I can face that again! (I take the pill to try and regulate my cycle, obviously not needed for contraception)
