Degeneration of meniscus

So ongoing knee pain for.months ...probably over a year. Started with pain when sitting crosslegged etc.
Now pain there a lot.
Gp didn't want to see me but referred to physio
Diagnosed probable meniscus degeneration and gave exercises..
I haven't been consistent doing them and I will but the pain is so bad at times .
I can't take codeine or morphine based painkillers .
Ibuprofen not helping .
What can I do? Obviously upping the exercises
Would deep heat help?
Anyone had this diagnosed ?
What treatment worked ?

That’s me , I got diagnosed with the same! Unfortunately it cost me several hundred pounds as I had private MRI and orthopaedic appointments. I even had plasma injections which cost a lot but did nothing.

Cortisone injection did give me relief.

I was a runner and it was tough news.

I’m interested if anyone has any positive stories, I don’t.

I'm a few years later, no real improvement. I am not in the pain I was and physio massage did help a bit but I can’t walk too far (more than 10 miles) can’t do steep hills and can’t run.

Also can’t kneel down without pain or sit back on my haunches ever.

Time did ease the pain but months not weeks.

I hope others have better advice.

DH had this - had keyhole surgery in both knees (not at the same time) to tidy up the straggly bits and fish out the bits floating about that get caught in the joint.

fixed.

Usually surgery is the cure, but not always. My DH had the surgery but is now having issues again a few years later.

Cortisone erodes your cartilage, so while it will make you feel better in the short term, it’s not a good long term solution.

I’ve heard that gel injections are really helpful. I can’t remember the name of them though. I’ll google and edit if I find it!

And if you can manage exercise? It’s always helpful as the stronger the surrounding muscles are, the more support they provide for your knee.

I had mine shaved via arthroscopy in my early 30s after an MRI. The consultant said it was typically a sporting injury, but I didn’t play sport (maybe from
pushing buggy uphill 😆 ). My other knee doesn’t like hills these days (20 years hence), but have so much other health stuff going on, I’m ignoring it for now!
