Is this just a bad cattarh? Thick mucous at back of my nose won’t shift

I had a cold in October, however it got settled in back of my nose, the passage between nose and top of my mouth.
I can feel it there, very rarely it would dislodge as thick phlegm junk, making me throw up as it is usually dangling there with me badly gagging, imagine this happening in a public place where people are around, had this yesterday in a car park and also at Xmas dinner with PILS.
My nose is clear and unblocked, the problem is deep inside.
Idont know what to do.
I contacted GP before Xmas, had a phone call with them , gave me antibiotics.
I gargled salty water, had steroid nasal drops, had 2 different antibiotics, inhaled over hot water steam bowl with Wicks.
Im really at my wits now, going back to work, very public place, I can’t imagine gagging there, it’s really bad when it disclodges as it seriously makes you sick, also the constant throat clearing making the horrible sounds to pull it out.
I also causes my throat hurt, like the mucous is there creating thick crusty lining and won’t go.

Someone told that they had the exact same and had to have a surgery where they punctured the inside of the nose and clean it all up.. I worry that it will happen.
Now I remember when I was small and being ill , my mum used to say if I won’t get better they will put a metal wires into my nose to get it out.

Post nasal drip, it's horrible. Get yourself a steam mug and commit to steaming with Olbas oil for 6 weeks 3x a day. Don't do it a couple of times and then give up, keep going.

HoggyDunlop · 03/01/2024 12:24

Have you tried using a netipot for a sinus rinse? It's great, and a chemical free way to clear everything out.

LuckyCharmz · 03/01/2024 12:26

Try avoid lactose/ dairy products, as they can be very mucus forming.
I also read on here recently that drinking pineapple juice can help?

N acetyle cystéine capsules may help. It's a mucolytic so thins thé mucous which enables it to drain.
You can buy 600mg ones. I'm prône to sinusitus so when thé weather/pressure changes take 2 every morning. Keeps me antibiotic and steroid free.

I had a cold in November and had this for ages after, along with an accompanying sinus headache - with the added bonus of globs of something landing on my vocal chords every so often and literally rendering me speechless until I could cough enough to shift it!

For the nose part I second the recommendation of a neti pot - or look up the NeilMed sinus rinse (Boots have them too) - it can loosen the gloop that gets stuck higher up.

I had that this time last year after a cold. It felt exactly where you describe. Felt like I was choking if I lay flat in bed at night. I think I got Sinufed Decongestant tablets based on seeing it recommended on here by people who'd had the same. Did seem to work.

And I also regularly put a warm compress kind of just around my inner eye socket area where your sinuses are and gave it a bit of a massage. I think my sinuses were probably a bit blocked and causing the congestion at the back of my throat.

I think I took antihistamines for a while too just in case I was a bit sensitive to something in the environment.

Sleep with your bedroom window slightly open, don't have it too stuffy.

Run the shower so your bathroom gets steamy before you get in it it.

If you can take some anti inflammatories for a few days that may also help to relieve the inflamed tissue so everything can start training properly.

Stay really hydrated, regular sips of water to thin the mucous.

I don't know what age you are but I'm 51 and my post nasal drip has got worse in the last few years. I recall my mum saying the same at that age. Apparently it can be hormone-related so can be an issue at perimenopause time.

Mucousymucous · 03/01/2024 12:47

Thanks everyone. I’m 50 so maybe the age and hormones has something to do with it.
Just had a scenario here, when I was talking to a lovely postie and all of sudden I could feel something moving into my throat from my
back of nose, immediately made me to do gargling sound even I didn’t want to, poor postie looked at me in a horror! This is what I mean..it’s horrible.
@rubydoobydoo i read about the Neti pot and I was looking into it but I’m a bit chicken trying these things, someone said it’s like drowning feeling ( I’m actually non swimmer and never had face or nose in the water) would you tell me how is it please?
I was thinking maybe use syringe from Calpol to flush it with salty water?

The sinus rinse thing is less scary I think as you can vary how hard you squeeze it - and I quite enjoyed it after the first time, especially when gunk started coming out the other side! If you squirt anything up there make sure you use sterile water such as boiled that has been cooled down (it feels more pleasant when it's still lukewarm too!).

Mucousymucous · 03/01/2024 13:37

@rubydoobydoo in regards of the gunk starting coming out after the rinse, I wonder how that works as so far I saw the gunk coming out like thick hard crusts(tmi🥺)
How that would work, will it make soft and liquidy?

rubydoobydoo · 03/01/2024 13:44

More TMI here.... what was coming out of mine was soft yet fully formed lumps of luminius green stuff - hopefully loosening some of this would help the crusty bits come free?

QueenAstrid · 03/01/2024 13:46

Another one here to recommend the Neilmed sinus rinse. It’s fine once you get used to it!
