Gallbladder surgery - consultant appointment

Hello,

I've been offered a consultant appointment for general surgery at the end of the month.

Does anyone know what's likely to happen at the appointment and how soon after my surgery is likely to be? Will I see a consultant then be banged on a long waiting list?

TIA for any wisdom.

Don't know about the waiting time but when my husband had an appointment with the consultant it was to find out details of how bad the symptoms and pain were. (The consultant also phoned me separately as he believed my husband was downplaying his symptoms!) Good luck - you'll feel so much better after the surgery!

Thank you - how long after did he get his surgery?

This was a good while ago now so I'm not sure how much things have changed now with how much the NHS was struggling.

The consultant appointment was to go through what needed to be done and I was given a BMI goal to hit before surgery and placed on a waiting list. My surgery was about a year later.

Most other people around the time were being seen a lot faster than me though - while I was losing weight quickly I also developed adhesions and was getting near constant liver infections leaving me very ill and too weak for surgery. Once I hit the BMI goal (40) there was a bit of a struggle with finding a time between infections when I was well enough which delayed things further.

If you have a 40+ BMI I'd start a diet ASAP.

Dh waited around 8 months from consultation where they agreed to the surgery to his date and that was only due to repeated infections, a&e trips and hospital admissions for IV antibiotics as he had repeated flare ups. If he had no such issues he’d still be waiting.

I am sure I was a good 6 months between consultant and removal. Like a poster above, I ended up in hospital (including Greece on holiday) with mine and had repeated GP visits back in the UK for attacks needing medication that included morphine.
