Haemorrhoidectomy

Hi,

I am due to have a haemorrhoidectomy in 11 days. Surgical removal of internal piles and also external piles/skin-tags under general anesthetic. I am absolutely petrified having read some previous comments on here.

I am wondering if I got the internal ones banded instead of removed, and just the external removed surgically this would help the recovery pain. What does everyone think?

Has anyone had a positive recovery experience for a balanced view?

Lastly, give me all the recovery meds/advice please. I want to be prepared!

TIA x

Just commenting because I'm due to have this done Feb 13th and I'm also terrified.

I've had mine banded and it didn't work so I'm in for the same as you. Please let me know how it goes if you go ahead.

I have decided to go ahead so I will keep you posted!

I might not read too much until after the event 😂 I can't decide if I'm more scared of the pain or the general anesthetic at this point!
Wishing you all of the luck and hopefully come March we'll both be sporting shiny new pain free bums!

Jo453 · 08/01/2024 07:45

It’s definitely the pain for me. I am usually very brave with things like this but I have definitely read too much bad stuff.

Yes roll on new bums for spring 🤣

Just seen this. How is it going for you? Have you had the op yet? My piles (internal and external) are bothering me atm and I'm sick of them but my gp said they don't recommend surgery anymore because of how bad the recovery is 😳

Hi,

I had the operation yesterday. It was Ligasure Hemorrhoidectomy. I ended up getting it done with a spinal and mild sedation rather than general anaesthetic as recommended by my surgeon and anaesthetist, something to do with the muscles relaxing better this way and prolonged pain relief in recovery. I was sceptical but went with their advice and I am so glad I did. I couldn’t feel a thing and was awake but relaxed and the theatre nurse held my hand and chatted to me throughout (lovely but kind of wanted her to shut it so I could just relax as I felt sleepy).

I am 1 day post op and am yet to feel any pain. So far only discomfort which I’ve taken paracetamol and ibuprofen for. I was also sent home with liquid morphine, I did ask for this and pushed for it but I will try to only use it once the pain of a first poo comes!

Woke up this morning feeling great, suggested a walk, got showered and dressed etc. Half an hour later I was exhausted. I feel fine but important to remember to rest as it is an operation after all.

Bracing myself for the next few days as they are meant to be worse but hoping I am lucky x

My husband has just had his removed as well as a large skin tag under general. He's two weeks post op now. At first he seemed to be doing ok and not in that much pain but since he's started going to the loo he's been in quite a bit of pain. He's hardly able to leave the house yet due to when he needs to go he needs to go and then has to bathe. He's still bleeding a bit but as soon as it starts to heal and then gets sore again after a poo. He's found it a tricky process to keep clean and dry.

He was told by the consultant that the recovery "won't be as quick as he'd probably like" ...whatever that means.

Hi OP, how is your recovery going?

Jo453 · 31/01/2024 13:08

Hi,

I am 18 days PO and doing really well. Things I’ve done over the last week which are signs of improvement:

Drove every day
Walked 10K steps
Had sex
Been out for meals and drinks

I would say day 3-7 were the worst then I went uphill from there. Going to the toilet is still uncomfortable but no pain afterwards.

How’s your recovery now? Has it solved the problem? Having the same issue myself hence the interest.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 19/04/2024 22:07

Can I ask what your symptoms were to make you have the op? I get a lot of pain especially if I'm Sat a lot (at work for example).

I'm not sure I'd be brave enough for an op though.

Hi,

There was a lot of dull aching when sitting for a period of time. I sit most of my day for work in my office. Toilet trips were painful and flare ups afterwards. Also cosmetic, they were very visible which made me self conscious. I am so pleased I’ve had it done x

Yes it has solved the problem and I’m recovered now. Very pleased I had it done x
