sedating medicine for child...

Following on from my previous thread about nervous 10 yr old/blood test - medised has been suggested to give him to calm him beforehand...is this the best thing ? any other suggestions ? Am totally ignorant about medicines for children as apart from antibiotics I've never given him anything ever, he used to spit Calpol out as a babe so I gave up !

medised helps aaid restful sleep so work well to help my dd if shes ill, if shes due to have injection of some kind i just give calpol as i dont want to sedate her, just reduce the pain.
i find a huge cookie waved at her just as needle goes in distracts her enough, but obv your ds may have more issues with it
medised doesnt knock them out in a way i think you mean, just makes them drowsy, he'll still be AS nervous and wrrried

speak to your surgery about it first, thy may be able to advise?

mm, have discussed the practical bits of this on my other thread - just want him to feel slightly less uptight, not drowsy but a bit more chilled ! Unfortuntely we have to go to the hospital for this, which ups the stress levels all round (I include myself here !)...cookie sounds good though !

cant the hospital suggest offer anything?..sorry if im covering old ground from your previous thread?..alternativly maybe something like BAch's rescue remedy?..was looking at this yesterday, meant to 'relax' you often recomended for driving tests etc??

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 11:07

no, you're being helpful - thank you...I use Bach's Rescue Remedy - not sure if it really works, but I like to think it calms me ! The play specialist at the hospital was great last time, it's just that it's as if we're starting all over again each timer we go..anxiety levels remain high, even though he knows exactly what will be happening and that the actual blood taking is over fairly quickly, once they get the needle in..

its the build up thats the problem i think(it is for me anyway) the knowing of whats coming may get him worked up..medised, rescue remedy anda cookie..he'll be spoilt for choice..seriously though i hope hes ok bless him!

thank you - dh pointed out that he might be better this time - he's a year older - and maybe I'm just anticipating things too much !

Hi Mary anne

just thought another thread might be of interest to you, different test but similar problem....there is a post about half way down from someone who worked in paediatrics....might be of interest.

hadtherapytoo · 17/03/2008 15:29

Sorry should have said, the OP is 'how on earth to keep 2 year old still for them to have x-rays' or similar. Sorry!!

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 16:05

Phenergan is another sedative, I think, MaryAnn (missed your other thread, sorry) but I believe that like Medised, it can actually send some children wild, not calm them down. So if you try either, have a dummy run beforehand.

I think the hospital/GP should be more help here, tbh. Poor little chap. Ours is petrified by the dentist but we always just squeak through. I think needle phobia is a bit different.

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 16:28

hello Marina - asked in the chemist this morning and they showed me the Phenergan but then weren't sure whether it might affect blood test results - also ds hates any syrupy mediciney stuff - he's never successfully had Calpol - so am now thinking maybe some Rescue Remedy losenges - even if they don't work, he might think they are helping him keep calm...I live in dread of the day he'll ever need actual treatment at the dentist too - can't imagine how he'd react !
