Little toes

Is it normal for a toddler (walking 6 weeks approx) of 16 months to still have pointing in little toes. They're relatively long but curve round under the top of the next toe.

Hi Saffron,

My ds (2yrs) seems like he has the same thing with his toes. Mainly the two middle ones. They were like this since birth. They arent real long but they just dont have that straight look. They curve a little towards the bigger toe. Ive been asking my dh if they will ever straighten and he says should evewntually. I just made an actual comment about this the other night as a matter a fact. I think I will ask his doctor next visit. I thought they would of straightened after the baby stage.
I'm sure its nothing to worry about because everyones features are different. I would ask the doctor to make sure.

Also his toes seem to be so crowded. Their small too. They kid of overlap a little. Dont know if this has anything to do with the curving.

Friend is a "trained" children's shoe fitter. She says that children should not be fitted for firm sole shoes until they have been walking at least 6 weeks, and their toes have uncurled.
Which makes me think, Saffron, that your tot's feet are exactly normal.

I'm not so sure about 3angels: do you let him go barefoot enough? Do you think his shoes are too small?

Hi Zebra - His toes were actually like this since birth. I noticed them right in the hospital. As far as the shoes I've never really put him in shoes till around age 1 Just a little over a year. Ive never liked usung shoes too early. The only time hes in shoes now is when were out which isnt much.

I'm thinking that since hes been like this since birth maybe its the way his toes are going to be. I'm not really sure. I thought by now they would of straightened. Maybe they still will but if not its not a big deal either. Thanks for your reply.

Threeangels, both my DSs next-to-the-little-toes curve in the direction of the big toe. Mine do too and I'd always assumed it was because of pointy shoes but now I'm beginning to think it may be partly a genetic oddity.

Curly toes are pretty much normal, and often don't correct themselves completely. As long as they are not causing any problems they should be left well alone and not interfered with- the treatment can be worse than the problem!!
