Help - 11.5month old DS2 projectile vomits every day

My DS2 is nearly 1 and has projectile vomited almost every day probably for the past 4 months.

He had bronchiolitis in Nov 07 and has been quite a chesty baby ever since. We do have an inhaler for him which we use from time to time when he's particuarly wheezy. At the time, the Doctors said that his vomiting was due to his lungs spasming. I've been back to the HV since, and she said the same thing, and suggested different foods to try. I did think that perhaps he just had a really strong gag reflex as he couldn't cope with lumpy foods at 6-9 months, although eats normally now.

Its just so frustrating - my poor DS1 who is 4 just takes it in his stride, whilst DS2 is trying to smear the vomit everywhere with his hands as he's being sick! On average he is sick - and I mean REALLY SICK - about 5 times a week, and sometimes twice a day. Nothing seems to be a particular trigger (wondered if he had an allergy) but nothing stands out, nor does the time of day make much difference. Sometimes he just starts choking on his own saliva, causing him to cough and then projectile vomit everywhere.

Docs don't seem worried though as DS2, like DS1, was a big boy (91st percentile) and is gaining weight as a normal 11-12month old should.

Trouble is I find it quite distressing and we've now thought twice about taking our boys to restaurants (which is something we did regularly with DS1) for fear that DS2 will projectile vomit all over the place.

Does anyone have any advice or shared experiences - am fed up of the multiple washing, and picking bits of sick out of his beautiful curls and have given up trying to get the smell of sick out of his bedroom.

HELP!

Have you tried to give him a break in the middle of eating a meal? My ds used to vomit alot, this really helped.

I experienced something v similar with my DS. He would projectile vomit at least once every day (I think we used to have 1 sick free day every 3 weeks or something). It was REALLY distressing so totally understand what you're going through, I got quite desperate tbh. With DS it started at around 7 months when he got a throat infection or something. He never really got over it and had one thing after another until he was nearly one. All this time was a vomiting hell, even first thing in the morning he would gag and vomit on an empty stomach sometimes. We never thought it would end but found that once he had got properly well and had no catarrh etc lurking, that he was fine. He does have fairly large tonsils too which imo makes the gag reflex worse. No dr's won't care, we went through all that too! I hope it ends for your ds2 soon. We found restaurants hard too but did it from time to time when feeling brave. I figured better in a restaurant than on your friends new carpet or something

My DD used to do this too. Maybe not quite every day but 3-4 times a week. She grew out of it after she was about 13-14 months and is NEVER sick now, at 17 months. We always thought it was bad reflux. It was always shortly after feeding though.

I completely sympathise with you. My DS has phases of vomiting every day and it is so hard. He had a condition from birth which meant he was projectile vomiting 3 or 4 times a day - once we got that sorted out with an operation, he just seemed to have a sensitive gag reflex so he vomited on lumpy food when we were weaning him, then when he has a cold, he seems to cough and cough and then vomit - I completely understand about going to restaurants (we always carry a plastic bowl round with us which has been used in public several times )

Again the doctor has not been much help about it although we also got an inhaler but it didn't really make much difference.

However, DS is now 20 months and, touchwood, he does seem to have grown out of it pretty much. He still coughs and coughs at times but is not sick anymore with it (in fact, the last time he was sick was November time which is a major achievement).

No advice but it does seem to get better

Thanks so much to all your helpful advice - in fact, had to collect DS2 from nursery as he "was being sick everywhere" (tell me something I don't know...).

Decided enough was enough and took him straight round the doctors, and saw a really helpful understanding Doctor. He has referred us to see a paedeatrician to try to determine the cause or trigger of the vomiting.

But who knows how long I'll have to wait for an appointment!

Thanks everyone.
