Hi - in 2 weeks time (yes only 2 left to go) am running a 10km run in aid of the British Heart Foundation. In the past I've struggled with 5 km but have been training quite a bit -is any-one else out there training for a 10km run or are there any threads I can join? Am doing this run for my dad who is severley depressed but also has major heart problems. Thanks

Hi gymgym there's aRunner's thread here. Come on over

I used to struggle around 5k and found that I was just feeling better as I got to the end so now go further. I've done a couple of 10k races and will probably do a couple this year if I can get my butt in gear. Good luck for your race.

Thanks Saggarmakersbottomknocker will have a look at that thread! How long did it take you to do 10k? Think I'm gonna be way at the back with my time!!

The last one was 1 hr 6 min - I was way undertrained - I'd love to do under an hour but I'm not hopeful. I blame my age lol

I have been running 10k 3 times a week lately, but only on treadmill (incline of 1%)

takes me between 58 mins and 1 hr 5 , depending on how am feeling. prob take me AGES more outside I bet!

good luck with your run, what a good cause

gymgym10 · 16/03/2008 19:33

Wow that is a fab time! I was thinking I'd be happy if I could do it under 70 mins!!

yes, but treadmill running is much easier than outdoor running, isn't it?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 16/03/2008 19:38

I find the opposite dinny. I can't find the right pace on a treadmill - I'm either right up at the front or hanging on for grim death at the back!

dinny · 16/03/2008 19:41

really, Saggar?

I just don't think it takes as much effort as road running.... actually, had asked elsewhere what incline you should set a treadmill to to best mimic road running - any idea?

obviously to do 10k on a treadmill in under 60 mins, you have to run at 10kph, though I often do a slightly slower first 30 and then faster second 30 mins, else too knackered early on

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 16/03/2008 19:46

No idea - I avoid it like the plague. I know I can do a 10 min mile and maintain it for a couple of miles but if I set the treadmill to that pace it feels too slow - maybe it's the incline that would make a difference? I think I must chop and change my pace quite a bit on the roads and the machine just doesn't offer me that flexibility.

dinny · 16/03/2008 19:56

God, you must be good, I do find running at 10k quite knackering for an hour

am most comfortable at 9k an hour, I think

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 16/03/2008 20:00

Oh god no - I can't sustain that pace, as my 10k time proves. But if I'm only doing 2 miles then I can do it quite fast, although I'm fit for nothing at the end.
