Recurring gum boil in same spot!

This is so hideous, but here we go...

I have a boil on my bottom gum. It's very painful. This is the third time it's happened and every time it happens in the exact same spot.

The very first time it happened was probably a year and a half ago. And it happened maybe a few months after that. Tonight is the first time it's happened since. Each time, it's burst on its own.

Anyway, I googled it and apparently it's something you need to seek urgent medical advice for! It could be a sign that your tooth is rotten or you have gum disease and if the boil isn't drained properly the bacteria could go on to attack other teeth and even your brain! A more rare thing is that it's cancer!

I've panic sent a request to book an appointment at a Harley Street dentist just now. I have an appointment at my actual dentist in a couple of weeks time but worried it'll be too late by then.

Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm so worried it's very dangerous.

So as not to drip feed, I brush my teeth with a Philips sonicare toothbrush twice a day and use mouthwash.

Thank you in advance

That's awful OP!

Did you see a doctor or dentist last time?

Also, flossing twice a day is important as well,or even using a water pik.

I would rinse with salt water and see the dentist tomorrow.

The very first time I saw the dentist and he just gave me a course of antibiotics but didn't say anything else at all about it. The second time it came up, it burst quite quickly and so I didn't end up going to the dentist about it.

This is the third time and it hasn't burst yet and it's quite painful. I'm so anxious now

My DD gets these occasionally because she's ASD and doesn't brush well. Sometimes from too much salty snacks or sugar, which are irritating. I make sure she brushes her gums as well as her teeth and they go away within a day or so. It's always scary to google health stuff but it's usually so over dramatic! While you wait for your appointment brush your gums and use mouthwash & brush after every time you eat. Hopefully that will clear it up & prevent more in the meantime. It could be the way your mouth/gums/palate is shaped so food stays trapped between your cheek & gum. I think this is why my DD has the issue as well on top of her hygiene difficulties. Even just rinsing after food & drink might help. Good luck and try not to worry 💜

There's oral pain reliever gels you can get too. Google always says it's cancer even if it's nits or gas, don't pay attention to that. Gum sores are really common. Ask your dentist next time, I know they see much worse every day. Genetics have a lot to do with oral health as well, even perfect hygiene isn't enough for some because of it.

Thank you so much. Won't brushing it risk popping it? It looks like it's getting quite pussy. And apparently it's dangerous to rupture at home and needs to be done by a medical professional.

How did you get on at the dentist @ihavebadteeth ?

runbackhome · 28/12/2023 14:11

I had one years ago and needed a root canal in the end. I still have scar tissue that apparently is just the shell. Nobody ever mentioned it being dangerous!! 🤯

I had an emergency dentist appointment so she sort of just ruled out anything dangerous.

She did an x-ray and found an infection where the boil was. She said it was most likely because my gum in that area was allowing for food to accumulate rather than when more typically this happens it's because of a cavity in the tooth causing food to get stuck and hence an infection. She said it was also likely to be a gum problem as it's my front bottom teeth that are affected and those teeth do not usually get cavities. She also said some of my jaw bone had eroded!! I forgot if she said it was from the infection or if it was gum disease...

She prescribed me antibiotics and said my regular dentist would need to assess whether or not I would need a root canal.

When she tapped my teeth for sensitivity, FOUR teeth felt sensitive. This worried me a bit as I wonder if I could potentially need a root canal in four teeth!

I forgot to add that she did try to drain the boil by sticking a needle in but nothing came out and she said it wasn't the gooey kind rather it was the hard kind. It hurt really badly regardless!

She said the infection can make you have a fever and make you feel unwell. If it does then I'll need to make another emergency appointment. If not, to continue the course of antibiotics and then see my regular dentist in a week.

The area is still very painful.
