Did you go to work with mastitis ?

I have mastitis quite bad and my breast is agonising to touch. I went to the drs this morning and they've prescribed 2 weeks of anti biotics. Also had a temp and flu like symptoms.
I have two long shifts the next couple of days but debating whether to go as DS won't be able to feed in that time and worried it's going to make it worse?
What would you do?
I just feel guilty because the time of year and looks like I just want to be home!
Genuinely feel like crap.
My job is very intense and not the kind of job where I can hide behind a desk all day.

Well I would get signed off from gp.
I hadn't fed my 2yr old as much as usual a couple of weeks ago and the symptoms came on thick and fast. I felt rubbish at work but yours sounds worse than me so no id call in sick unless the antibiotics kick in asap.
Get your baby feeding feeding feeding!

I wouldn’t go to work if you’re feeling that poorly. It sounds miserable and quite reasonable to call in sick. Hope you feel better soon.

Weepingskies · 27/12/2023 21:22

You can self certify for a week though which may well be enough so I wouldn’t ask the doctor for a sick note just yet

vicobarbie · 27/12/2023 21:22

It's really important that you rest, drink loads of fluids and have the baby feed off you as much as possible so it's completely valid that you don't go to work. You can end up in hospital with mastitis, happened to a friend of mine more than once. She has 5 kids close in age so resting was difficult. Ive had it but my baby was small so feeding every few hours.

Lastminutebride · 27/12/2023 21:22

I was on mat leave when I had it but doubt I’d have been able to work. It was so painful I could barely lift my arm

unlikelychump · 27/12/2023 21:22

I consider a temperature to be a reason to call in sick. In fact that is my most common reason to call in sick. So no, I wouldn't.

I've felt like I was going to die of mastitis in the past, but luckily I only had it when they were really tiny.

Yeah this is what's happened with us. My son is also 2 and because of Christmas and change in routine he's not fed as much so now I've got mastitis. I've never ever had it before in the whole 2 years feeding. It's awful , and making me really irritable.

My temperature is now gone. Started to take the anti biotics this morning after Gp appointment at 9am. Still feeling very drained and not well though and the breast is so sore (that's the worst part).

Yes I only work 2 days so would only be Thursday and Friday I need off and wouldn't be next in to the following Thursday.

I ended up hospitalised with mastitis after my first was born. I wouldn’t be going to work with it.

auburnglow788 · 27/12/2023 21:36

Ask the doctor to sign you off for a week. You cannot be at work in that much pain, with a temperature, aching all over and you may well start leaking a fair bit whilst there. You'll struggle to focus whilst in pain, so need to be home where you can use hot/cold flannels if you need to, express if you need to and take your antibiotics on time etc. Don't feel bad either, these things happen.

I had it after DD was born. I was in agony, and the slightest touch made it throb all the more.
Two lots of ABs didn't cure it and I ended up as an emergency admission while we were at PILs one weekend. I had to have an op under GA to have the abscess cut out.

Swirls346 · 27/12/2023 22:16

Ok think I will deffo be taking a couple of days off work.
I thought first of all I had a virus coming on as had a temp and then very shivery and full body aches, this was Christmas Day. My boob did hurt as well but didn't think much of it. Then yesterday I felt worse in myself and boob red and sore to the touch (and hot). Then no better today so went to drs.
I just thought I'd got another virus or the flu and the painful red breast was unrelated but now realising it's actually connected. Not sure why I didn't put two and two together. I've never had it before maybe that's why.

That sounds awful 😞

No no no! You don’t want to risk any further blockages or anything to make it worse and you need to keep feeding as much as you can. Don’t go in and don’t feel guilty - mastitis is bloody awful and a genuine reason to be off work.

KnickerlessParsons · 27/12/2023 22:23

It was. I have a lovely scar along the top of my nipple to remind me about it too.
