Dd1 (10), cam back from a 5 days away with the school with what looked like a scab on her chin. It looked like she'd knocked it on something.

She said she had picked at it a couple of times because it is itchy, but also said she doesn't remember banging it at all.

It is very red and a little bit weepy and crusty. It does seem to have got a bit bigger since she got back (friday), but I don't know if thats cos she has picked at it again. Have told her not too though.

Have googled impertigo picks, and it does look a little bit like some of the pics, but then again it just looks like a scab too.

Should I take her to the docs ?

Yep take her coz it can spread pretty quickly and impetigo on the face needs oral antibiotics as well as the cream

CrackerOfNuts · 16/03/2008 11:46

Oh great.

Will it be classesd as urgent ? Only I know I stand practically zero chance of getting her an appointment in the morning unless I say it is urgent.

Yes because if it is impetigo the quicker antibiotics are started the quicker it will clear up and they can't go to school until they have been on antibiotics for 48hrs or the scabs have completeley dried up.

CrackerOfNuts · 16/03/2008 11:58

Ahh ok, thanks, will insist on an appointment then.

Have told her to leave it alone and use a seperate towel etc in the bathroom.

Will go into the office in the morning and tell them I am taking her to the docs.

Yep, no sharinf towels ect... wash hands frequently, no touching it, nails cut short just in case unless she can completeley refrain from picking
It doesn't seem to bad at first but if it spreads can be a pain to get rid of.

CrackerOfNuts · 16/03/2008 12:16

Thanks

Have just asked what it looked like when she first noticed it, and she said it looked like a spot, but then turned into a scab.

It usually goes into a blister before the scab but a spot can become infected and then turn to impetigo so better to get it checked out

Have to go gp's for 11 and sit and wait as there were no appointments left for today. Receptionist said that in her opinion, dd didn't need to be seen today as it may not even be impetigo and even if it were it didn't warrant an emergency appointment.

I very calmley told her that as she couldn't actually see Dd1, she had no idea what it was, and that I was not leaving it any longer for for it to get worse or have dd infect anyone else, unless of course she wanted the whole of the school ringing up for appointments in the next few days.

Bloody cheeky cow.

Well done
Hope it gets sorted quickly x

CrackerOfNuts · 17/03/2008 12:32

Thanks

We are back with antibiotic cream. Doc said that he will just give her that for now, as it is only a small patch and is already quite dried up.

If it spreads or doesn't go with the cream, then they will give her oral ab's too.

well done for getting it sorted nutty. someone sent their child to school with untreated impetigo and ds1's eczema became infected with it and he was in a terrible terrible state.

magnolia74 · 17/03/2008 12:43

Glad its sorted
