Worried after pelvic ultrasound

I had a pelvic ultrasound this morning as I've been getting approx monthly (mid-cycle-ish) grumbling pain in my left waist area for a couple of years. I had an u/s scan about two years ago, and they found nothing of note apart from a small cyst. They offered me that info right there at the time.

I had this second scan because a few weeks ago the "grumbling" pain was incredibly intense (to the point of nausea, painkillers not working).

Anyway the sonographer didn't give me any info today, even when I asked if things looked okay. She said she'll send the info to my GP and I should hear back shortly.

So now I'm feeling worried! I've googled ovarian cancer, and although I don't really have bloating, I have definitely had more frequent and urgent urination over the last six months or so (pee tests were normal).

I'm 48, perimenopausal, and have the mirena coil.

They’re not usually allowed to tell you, although some do, but in my experience particularly with X-rays, they won’t give you any info at all!

Mabelface · 21/12/2023 09:54

Don't worry about not getting the results immediately, it's perfectly normal for the scan to be reviewed before giving you the results. It absolutely doesn't mean that they've found anything sinister.

The same thing happened to me during my pelvic US in that they wouldn't tell me anything, I was worried too but I got the results from my GP and the scan was all completely normal. I don't think they're supposed to tell you anything.

endlessdarkness · 21/12/2023 10:17

They aren't supposed to say anything. It's probably better they don't. That said, the odd one will make comments. I've had one tell me, "I can't tell you anything and your doctor will be in touch, but I wouldn't worry." It was obvious they were telling me it was fine. I've had another tell me with great concern on her face, "When are you seeing your doctor for results?" I think she was on a power trip as there wasn't anything really wrong then. Most don't say a thing.

Thanks for your replies 😊. I probably wouldn't have thought twice about it if the sonographer last time hadn't given me the "all clear"! And I'm just really hoping I get (good!) test results before xmas, although I'm guessing that would be pushing it.

I’ve had a few u/s - private snd nhs. I’ve had ‘I’ll send results to your GP’ when there’s been nothing wrong or something not urgent. I had a private scan once when she went through the whole scan telling me what she could see and chatting loads, I’ve had questions ‘how are your bowels?’ (Fibroids) - but still didn’t say why she asked (nhs).
Last nhs scan (abdo), she said ‘nothing to see’, last private was ‘have you had operation in this area?’ (Hernia) - but said ‘results in 2 days’.
My abdo and gynae area have had a bad time of it over the years!!

It may depend who does the scan. If a sonographer they may be cautious and say nothing. I had pelvic us done by a doctor this year and she talked me through it.

Have you got the NHS app? My recent pelvic ultrasound results were visible on it within 24 hours

Hi OP.. If you would like a handhold I'm in the same boat! Had an external then internal ultrasound on Saturday and was told the results would go to my GP within 7-10 days. I have a niggly left hand side too.

I know there is going to be a significant delay now because of Christmas. I might try the app though or is it best to live in ignorance until after Christmas?!

Please try not to worry, it's actually normal procedure for the sonographers performing the ultrasound not to give any details at the time of the appointment. This is for many reasons, firstly they often get the images reviewed for a second opinion, especially if they are not senior sonographers, and secondly, they are not qualified to advise you regarding any clinical issues found and how they will be managed or if the scan Is normal, what will happen next. You would leave the appointment with "all normal" or "it's a cyst", with no further information and be left panicking and worried until your GP got the results weeks later.

For a bit of personal context, I went for a kidney ultrasound not to long ago. The sonographer told me I was done, I said oh great was it all fine then, and they said that they will send the report to my GP and I should hear in a few weeks. The scan was completely normal. It really is just procedure.

Good luck @LongTermLurker

Quick update to say that all is okay(ish)! Nothing worrying, but two simple para ovarian cysts approx 2.5-3cm each. Just gone for a ca125 blood test "for thoroughness". Quite relieved!

RougeFraise · 28/12/2023 15:30

Good news. Just a warning, ca125 can be elevated due to ovarian cysts so don’t panic if it comes back raised.
